Is this a good reel to buy for the money? I can get it pretty cheap, but since redington discontinued, i dont know if its worth it. I plan on using it for striper fishing. Can someone help me?

I've used an 7/8 for smallies on the Delaware for three years, without any problems. In fact, I like it so much that when the prices came way down I bought another to keep as a spare.

There is a fine line between fly fishing, and standing in the water waving a stick.
I've had some problems with a couple Redington AS (the standard arbor version) reels. Used one in saltwater and the drag gave up the ghost after one weekend. I haven't tried to contact Redington yet (or whoever owns them now...Orvis?) but I'm not too optimistic since it was a discountinued model I picked up on ebay.
I heard good things about these reels before I bought mine so maybe I just got a dud (although since buying my reel I heard through the grapevine that the AS/AL reels were being discountinued due to drag issues). Also, I bought a spare spool and it does not fit securely on the reel (looks identical to my original spool but the machining is off significantly).
Just one guys experience - certainly not gospel. And again, I have never contacted Redington - for all I know, there may be a simple fix to my drag problem.
Orvis does not own Redington. They did make some reels for Orvis. Those reels have a small extra charge for any repair.
Sage bought Redington but do not call Sage. Redington is a separate company and you need to call them. They are a good company and offer great service.

I picked up a Redington AL 3/4 when they were discountinued. Obviously smaller than you are looking at. It is a decent reel. The 2 things I found it took a bit getting used to is the weight and width of the reel. Heavier and wider than I'm used to. I find I don't use it as often due to that.
Teton Reels sold here [url=http://www.feather-craft.com:67cf9]www.feather-craft.com[/url:67cf9] for the money I truely think you can't go wrong,I own four and use them for all my fishing, the large and regular arbors are even interchangeable in the same frame size,Drags are sealed and as high a quality as I've ever seen no matter what the price.
I know I tout these reels on here alot, but It's only cause I am so impressed with their quality, and sweet prices.

"I've often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before" A.K.Best
"Wish ya great fishing"
