Canine Breakthrough
I've been bringing my dog fishing with me for awhile now.
In the past he was less than stealthy, splashing around and tring to play fetch.
Last week was the worst, he got into it with a "non-social" dog and was banished to the car.
I told him; "that's it, from now on you stay home".
Well this morning the two of us headed out as usual.
When we got to the river I layed down the law and he obeyed.
He stayed with me all day sitting on the bank watching me fish
We went to a river with good long, flat dry fly pools
He watched for rises.
He watched the drift of my fly.
When I caught a fish he was excited!
He understands!
He's a great fishing partner, he even prentended to be looking away when I made a bad cast http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif

Dudley, ... Hey, .. that's just grand.
Dogs can be great on the river, ...or a BIG problem.
A friends Chesapeake once DOVE right into the pool when he realized that BIG "logs" that were submerged were acually salmon. ... Needless to say, ... the Warden was NOT amused.
Luckily our Kenny isn't a "water" dawg and prefers to keep his feet as dry as possible.
A good fishin' dawg is always watching for rises:

A well-trained, well-behaved dog is a joy anywhere....a poorly behaved dog is liable to be drowned onstream around here, especially if an angler has a huge trout spooked by it.

My wife has raised and shown dogs for years. Her motto "Untrained is unloved"

It is so wonderful to hear of a responsible owner. My congratulations on your well-trained dog. It's obvious that you care.
I get so mad when I see a dog or cat loose, just running around. So many of them get injured, sick, or killed by cars. It's also just as upsetting to see signs this time of year for "Free Puppies" or "Free Kittens". There are also too many backyard-breeders that go for looks and conformation and not take in effect genetic balance.
Far too many animals are killed at shelters because of irresponsible breeding and/or ownership.
My felt hat off to you, Dudley, for taking time, training, and caring. It sounds like you have a winner on your hands.

I can tell you that from the vast majority of fly fishers with whom I associate..Leave the dogs at home...please..... I can't tell you how PO'd I get when someone decides to bring their dog to the river with them. Animals are curious and subject reactionary behavior..they like to check things and people out. Some of them LOVE the water and it matters not that someone is trying to catch a spooky trout in the pool in which they decide to take a swim.
Don't call me a dog hater... I am not...I have a dog and love him very much. He is well trained and well behaved. But I still don't take him to the river when I go fishing because I don't want anyone else to be bothered by his presence.
If you are fishing a private spot, which it sounds like you are not since other people had their dog there too, take him all you want. If there are other people who's fishing trip could be interupted in the slightest by his presence, leave the dog at home.
My two cents worth and I'm sticking to it.

These are the idle thoughts that posses a man's mind when he's not able to fish.

My dog Elsie loves to go too. She is part lab but hates the water. she just likes to watch. Pay no attention to that guy with the spinning rod in his hands. He was out of his mind at the time.

Sachel,
Sounds to me like you are a good and responsable dog owner.
Unfortunately, ... some are not. ... They tend to give dogs a bad name.

I had to stop taking my Lab fishing with me.
I could handle it once or twice, but when he started catching more fish than me every time we went out, I just had to draw the line.

I fish, therefore, I am... I am confused!!

It is amazing what you can train a dog to do. My first taste was when a buddies lab had a duck (that we did not know was there) swim 2 feet away from his nose while duck hunting. He just watched him swim by. I take my dog every time I go fishing and he lays where I tell him. Now if I could only keep the other fisherman from bothering him.
