rod holder for yaks
Hello fellow yaksters!
I am looking to install a rod holder on my kayak, BUT!
I want one that will hold a fly ,and spinning rod.
Does the Scotty rod holder fill that order?
Does it hold the fly rod well enough , I would not want to loose one of my fly rods .
I use the fly rod, and the kids spinning equipement.
While looking them up on the net, neither mentionned that they did both jobs, there design was very different from one another.
Any help would be great,
Thanks
Chris

I have one of each...a Scotty fly rod holder, and a Scotty spinning/casting rod holder.
I'll try to check them tonight, to see if either will hold the other rod type. I'll get back to you, unless somebody beats me to it.

I like my Scotty on my pontoon. I feel secure with it.

rod holder for yaks
I have both rod holders, I use the fly for both fly and spinning rods. I have never lost a rod out of the fly holders if you lock it in.

I also have both types of Scotty rod holders. I use the fly rod holders for both fly rods and spinning rods. I does very well on both and, when the strap is in place, holds them very secure, even in a rollover (which of course has never happened to me).

Both work for both!
I experimented last night and discovered that both the Scotty fly rod holder AND the Scotty spinning/casting rod holder will each hold both spinning AND fly rods.
With the rubber strap in place the fly rod holder holds both types of gear well.
With the sliding ring locked in place on the spinning rod holder, you won't lose your fly rod, since if a fish pulls the butt end out of the holder, the reel will catch on the sliding ring.
In summary, either rod hold CAN be used for both spinning & fly gear. If properly secured, you WILL NOT LOSE YOUR GEAR. Each type of holder has its advantages for the gear it was really designed for, however, and seems just a bit awkward when the other type is used.

THANKS!!!
I truly appreciate the info guys.
Thank you very much for taking the time to verify both types of rod holders for me.
I guess it will be off to the local outdoor sports store for me this weekend.
Happy and easy paddeling,
chris

Chris,
Thanks for asking, I was thinking about that too.

I have a Native Watercraft Ultimate 14.5 and I use no rod holders in front of me. I do have a milk crate with three rod holders.
My Heritage Redfish 12s each have a Scotty mount on the console. Most of the time, I don't use them. They get in the way.

The Scottys will serve you well. They make a very nice product, and have a number of good mounting options.
