Deceiver Question
Regarding the hackle tail. Many recipes specifically call for tying the hackles concave sides together, (), yet watching a video of Lefty himself tying one, he twists a bunch of hackles to achieve the opposite effect. Obviously, Lefty knows how his own fly should be tied, but how do you do it? He also does not bother with the built up head or eyes for that matter. The video is available here.

Re: Deceiver Question
are you talking about the 'rolling' he does with the feathers before he plucks them from the bundle?? or if they are tied in splayed like the way tarpon fly tails are usually done??
ive seen him tie it differently in another video. he plucked out 3 feathers and evened the tips and placed them down on the bench with the dull side up. then repeated the process and laid those 3 feathers dull side down on top of the other feathers and then tied them in that way. them he added a grizzly on either side of the tail. no splaying of the feathers.

Re: Deceiver Question
Yes the rolling is what I am referring to. So he does it both ways himself? That is interesting. In the video he seems to demonstrate that the profile when wet is still quite thin. The splayed technique just seems to be alot less labor intensive. I am tying a bunch of these for next spring's pike fishing, and I doubt they will last long when exposed to teeth, so a quick tie, and lots of them seemed to be in order. Thanks Norman.

Re: Deceiver Question
Tie them on tube flies to escape the pike's teeth.
