Hi Normand,
Those are absolutely great foam bugs. While I firmly believe that foam is wasted on anything but a Gurgle Pop, I believe that I'm going to have to tie up a dozen of those if I can find similar foam. Take care! 8T :)

Very nice!
Now for a question that I have been asking for years now and have yet to get a positive answer to: Does anyone have a source for firm open-cell foam? Back in "the old timey days", Herter's sold both closed-cell and open-cell foam spider bodies. The open-cell body would begin soaking up water as soon as it hit the surface and almost immediately started to slowly sink. This body, coupled with their 'fine' rubber legging material, made an absolutely deadly bream bug, as the sinking caused the legs to 'wiggle' with more sex-appeal than a Greek belly dancer. After all of these years, I still have an ample supply of the legging material, but can't find the appropriate type foam for the bodies. I have looked at synthetic kitchen sponges, but the air cells in the ones I have seen are much larger than those in the old Herter's bodies, which definitely precludes using them for the smaller sized bugs. Any help in locating an appropriate foam would be greatly appreciated.

Normand, love those spiders and the approiate names. How do they work in the bream world. Enjoy na dtake care, John.

i am assuming the word "bream" equates to "panfish" like "bluegills", "red ear sunfish" etc etc etc.
the "panfish" up here in connecticut just hammer those spiders! crappie and largemouth bass hit them also. i broke a sage rod last year when a 2-3 lb bass hit a spider tied with white foam and chaetreuse rubber legs.
i've also caught 100+ panfish using one spider! i guess i tie them for durability also!

The Ace hardware near me has open and closed cell foam weather stripping. It's in various sizes but only gray or white colors. Maybe that would work.

greenlantern:
Thanks for the top. Will check.with my friendly neighborhood ACE store to see what they have.
Normand:
"Bream" is a southern generic term that includes all of the sunfish other than large- and smallmpith bass and crappie, i.e., all of the smaller members of the family Centrarchidae.
To me, the term "panfish'" applies to any species, including both species of bass, catfish, and yellow perch, that "fit nicely in the pan". This would also include trout. Yeah, I know, an 85lb flathead (yellow) catfish is a little big for the average frying pan, even by Texas standards. However, by far the best eating size is from one to two-and-a-half pounds; perfect pan size!
