Right now spin fishermen are catching them in water shallow enough for the fly rodder at some local lakes. They've been getting the walleye after dark but the perch have been a daytime bite. I've even got a few nice perch on the fly rod & I was wondering if some of you are taking advantage of this pattern.
There is great Walleye fishing in the stretch of lakes East of Phoenix (between Apache Junction & Roosevelt Lake). Dirt road goes through the Superstition Mountains Up to the Tonto forest. Great smallie fishing, Kamloops & Mc Cauneghy Bows, Bass & Crappie up at Roosevelt; then head up to Tonto Creek, & streams alon Mogollen Rim for some grest flyfishing for trout. Stop off at Tortilla Flats for a great Mexican plate & some cold beers (or margaritas). Makes for a nice off the beaten path exploration.
We have had some butt-ugly winds and weather the past few weeks on Lake Erie, which have prevented a lot of people from getting out. Shorthaul lives on the lake, and just looks at his boat with the hopes of actually using it before he has to have it put in dry dock for the winter.
Folks are getting walleye off the rocks at night with spin gear along the shoreline when they can get on the rocks. There's not much of a following for the fly rod with perch & walleye on the big lake, and I've been too busy working to notice what's going on at the inland lakes..
A friend of mine has been catching walleye on fly while fishing with other people using spinning gear to compare the results ---he feels he can catch 1:1 with the spinning guys AT NIGHT but has a catch ratio of 1:10 during daylight hours. Our perch are too deep to cast to with fly, the jigging that ive tried with flies hasnt caught a perch unless i put an emerald shiner on the hook--- then it does equal to a bare hook with an emerald shiner.
The gulls are roosting in the marina which means the shad and shiners are in and the water is cooling , the walleye follow the bait at night with an onshore wind---the majority of the walleye are caught in a spot that has rocks with a high bank which means a steeple cast into the wind in the dark---- all three of which individually make it a short night for me!

I've tried on several occasions to snag some perch on a fly with no luck, only be able to catch them with my UL spinning gear and mainly live bait. would be nice to catch one on fly though. what sort of flies work for perch anyway?

I've caught my perch on either a #6 or 8, don't remember which, crystal chartreuse woolly bugger or a #12 chartreuse bead head woolly bugger this fall. I've gotten the larger ones on the larger fly. In the spring I got a few sight fishing with a hare's ear where I could actually see them take it.
