It wasn't me this time but it could have been bad

This is a copy and paste from a local bulletin board. As there are a good many tooner's on here I thought it might be of interest. This happened on the Chattahoochee River in the metro Atlanta area about 30 miles south of where I normally fish, although I have been through this exact section. I think what happened was by grabbing the limb he got perpendicular to the current and flipped much as I did last year. You have to keep your pontoons parallel to the flow.

Never, ever, Don't Ever! Grab a limb across the river while in a pontoon boat in a strong current! I did so at the bottom of the chute just below Holcomb Bridge and almost drowned for my error. I went through the chute just fine but there was a limb I didn't maneuver quickly enough to avoid. So I thought I could grab it and shove the pontoon sideways about 6 inches to get around. As soon is I grabbed the limb and before I knew what was happening, I was upside down in the river with the pontoon boat on top of me and my legs wrapped in the rope from the drag chain which had immediately fallen out of the milk crate on back. Thank God (in all seriousness) there was a limb that allowed me to push my head above water and grab a breath. I was then able to get untangled and drag the pontoon via a side stroke to shallow water and get untangled from my fly line and get back in the boat and paddle over to Garrard's Landing.

You took a pontoon boat in fast water????? You got more Moxie than I have.

That's why I have several top-quality kayaks. And even with them, I get some tense moments, on occasion.

I would think it depends on the length of the pontoon. The really short boats sold at Bass Pro and such would be much good past class 3. There are longer pontoon boats that do just fine in big water; you can ferry quickly and you don't have to bail. These can be real fun for ex raft quides.

First off, I was not me, it was a local guy who posted this on another bulletin board. I shared this to help educate others. Second this was not really "White water", just a good current through a chock point. It sounds like he went down the chute at the bottom of the photo and grabbed a limb along the side. It does not take a lot of current to flip a pontoon if you get sideways to the current. That is exactly what happen to my fishcat, I got the tube sideways against the current and I was upside down instantly. I had just come down a faster section than what flipped me.

+1. Thank you Uncle Jesse! I am going to instill this lesson in my kids before they go out on the water again.

A very key lesson to remember is wear, not carry, your pfd. I did not inflate mine nor did the guy above although he commented further down in the discussion that he probably should have. Afterward I braided a larger "fob" for my inflatable pfd to make it easier to find by feel.
