Boo: Satin and Gloss
I just recently saw the post by dleo and have seen other rod refinishers/builders with a gorgeously done glossy rod. I've always refinished my boo in satin as to not scare fish when I'm on the water (as if my fumbling method of wading doesn't scare them). I'm starting to like that sparkle and shine from the high gloss. Assuming I use the same-brand product do I just apply the glossy above the satin coat or do I need to strip to wood and reapply?

satin is merely gloss with mica dust in it to cut the gloss so as long as it is the same brand you can scuff the original satin finish with steel wool and apply a coat of gloss over it. Cane rods that were made with a satin finish were traditionaly finished with gloss varnish and after a couple of weeks the gloss was cut by rubbing it out with either pumice(a matte finish) or rottenstone(a satin finish) and oil as the satin varnishes are not as waterproof as the gloss varnishes.

Splinter is right on target. What I like to do is to allow the finish to fully cure for about a month in a drying cabinet (approximately 90 degrees) with circulated air. Then I use some automotive products to get the desired level of finish. I first use a 2500 grit polishing paper to take out any minor imperfections and to dull the finish slightly, then I use Turtle wax swirl remover to buff the finish and finish it off with a 3M product called Finesse-It III which is a polishing compound. Using that method you can get anywhere from a dull finish to a very highly polished finish.

That is great news- easier than I thought. Great winter projects (LOL as I live in LA where temps are expected to hit 65 today). Sorry, all you snowbounders.

Since I dip my rods, I only use gloss. The particles will settle in the dip tube and there really is no good way to stir them into suspension. I have also read that the particles make the varnish less durable, tho I don't know this for certain. I like the rottenstone/oil rub because it results in the kind of finish I like. However you do finish, gloss or rubbed, do finish with a good wax every season or so. I like Butchers, but would not be afraid to use any other quality wax.
