That peta thing
I don't think they deserve capitalization either....hmmm just realized that could mean funding..
Anyway, since we are or will be under attack I'd like to point out....it has bothered me when I see or read folks tossing, cleaning, or whatever..live fish.
Personally I don't know what the fish feel and am only critical of it being done, written about, filmed, etc. so that it can be used to stir up public opinion against us.
They will nail us with the suffocation thing. They,ve been masters at using that sort of thing with hunting.

I like that PETA exposes horrid living conditions for animals, but other organizations actually do something about it. Saw a t-shirt the other day - "P eople E ating T asty A nimals"
-
No, that's not what its's all about, to me. I don't like the way it happens, and I don't understand everything about it, other than if it happenened to one of us, I would hate it, all I know is, it's been the way of life from the kick off of this game called life, and I want to enjoy it as much as I can. ( no, not at the pain of others) It's just life and how we live it now... are you the creator???

Not an attack, it just been the way of life for as long as we know it. I'm not going to make this Relig. And on another level, you would not be here today if not for these practises...

From limited discussions I have had with peta sympathizers, I get the impression if all the deer died of starvation, that would be just dandy, since it would be a "natural" event.

They talk the talk, but can't walk the walk. When have you heard of peta, or like groups, actually enhancing habitat? monetarily or otherwise?
Crickets chirping?

Thank God for PETA...I'm sure that, being consistent with all their wonderful, sensible, logical practices, they would severely punish their own children for scratching their arses when they get pinworms! They might KILL 'em! I can hear it now........."Now dear, isn't it a wonderful feeling, knowing that the burning, itching sensation in the seat of your pants is helping to perpetuate a species?"
Frickin' idiots!

JC,
In your example, what would probably happen is a die off, then a stabilization of the population at the appropriate size. This is usually what happens to a given animal population in a restricted area like an island or continent etc. The population does fluctate over time. WHen man interceeds and we no longer have natural controls such as preditors or we have non-native species injected into the mix this "balance of nature" gets out of balance.
In most places we stock fish and remove them, having little to do with a natural balance or feedback control loop. We put fish there to be taken or played with at our convenience.
My wife always says (tongue in cheek) that I like to go out and torture fish. On some level, that is what I am doing and my C&R fishing does little to help the balance of nature. After a few beers I might agree that my actions are cruel. Know what, thats too bad! I enjoy it so I fish. I win http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif

Pain is just a way to justify their goals. From the few I have talked to, thay don't want you to own pets,no fences, and all animals should be left alone. Not counting the poor dupes on the lower end follow the money to the upper end and see who would be there if it stops.
I did not fight my way to the top of the food chain to go back to eating bushes.

here's my take...the kind of fish i fish for, striped bass, really don't have many natural predators, being an inshore species. so they just kind of go through life, swimming and eating, kind of like we do with out jobs, etc. so then i come along, hook one, give him a thrill, take him out of the water for a few seconds and show him a whole different world, then let him go. i imagine him swimming back to his friends and saying, "man, you won't believe what just happened to me!" so i feel as if i'm performing a service.... http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif

Here is the sort of thing which really bothers me - I received a new book yesterday by a British author, John Bailey, title of the book is Fly Fishing subtitle,
The Fish, The Tackle & The Techniques. On first scan it appears to be a very well written and comprehensive book.
I got as far as page 9. At the bottom of that page is "The Caring Angler's Code" most of which is good stuff, then, this one:
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>
"Don't be greedy. If you can, catch a couple of fish from a shoal and move on to another challence. Once you've caught enough fish, pack it in for the day. Fish experience mental stress as well as physical pain.
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
(The bold is mine)
Stopped in my tracks! I do not believe that at all - BUT this is a book for people new to fly fishing....will they believe it?
And isn't this the influence of PETA? So many people believe anything in print must be so.

Peta, in their infinite wisdom was instrumental in the passing of a law in Massachusetts that prohibits the trapping of Beaver with leg hold traps. Now to those who live in Boston and would not know a Beaver from a Mink, this might make sense. After all, we can use have a heart traps, with special license and a location to move them to.
This law passed with most urban areas voting for and most rural areas voting against. The result is that the leg hold traps were much more effective. Beaver populations have skyrocketed. Flooding of homes has increased and so has incidents of Giardia. Beaver are happier, fish popluations are greatly effected as once fast moving water is now slowed by dams. Trout suffer, Bass are taking over former Trout habitat and rural Massachusetts has town governments scrambling to justify the many requests to override the law in every concievable legal way. Thanks pee ta.

Ever notice that after being released a Blue Gill will dart 3 - 5 feet sort of hesitate and them swim off normaly. Did it experence shock, pain, fear, etc. Who knows but If you or I were to be speared in the lip lifted into a very rare atmosphere and then tossed back we would probably have a heart attack. Or lay on the ground writhing in pain and anguish!!
PETA conducted an experiment to prove that fish feel pain. The control group had thier lips injected with a saline solution. The subject group lips were injected with a caustic solution. The control group went back to normal feeding upon release. The subject group did not feed for a couple of days. Therefore "Fish feel Pain!!". Or, do we fishermen dip our hooks in some exotic South American poison purchased from our local bait shop!!??

I feel more like I do now than I did when I got here!

I read that study about the acid in the lips.
Guess I need more tackle, when I fish I never use hollow point hooks or acid. I think that all this study proved is that a puncture in a fish's lips doesn't really impact them.
So as long as all I do is put a hole in their lips, it's humane and painless, it's only when I use acids in my baits that I inflict pain on them and disrupt their feeding.

The PETA study, done in the UK has been totally discredited, seems it was based on the premise that trout have a certain part in their brain which isn't there.

A funny thing happened to a friend of mine that thought she needed to be a part of peta. A family of skunks moved in under her house. Now, she could have trapped them and relocated them. Of course, she didn't want to go near them so she called for help. The only answer since NO ONE would go near her house, was to put a barrier around the nest and poison them. She is no longer a member of peta, LOL.

A while back on a local news station a PETA member was voicing her concerns over a local deer population issue. The host asked her if she had any pets which she calmly replied, "Why, yes I do and they are both neutered." After debate he came back around he asked what she fed her cats and asked what the fish that made up her pets cat food must have felt. While completely avoiding the question she tackled every issue she could from makeup testing to fishing and everything in between. After the interview a local farmer called up and said he would rather have a hook in his lip than be neutered any day. While trying to remain his composure the anchor thanked the cantancerous man and went to the weather.

seeing all the piercings on people today, i think a hook in the lip is a fashion statement!

So,,, what fly would be the coolest for a nipple piercing, belly button piercing, eyebrow piercing, etc.? I sense a great business opportunity!
Can't you just hear it? Oh I have a black and olive woolly bugger, tyed by so and so, hanging from my nose and from my nipple is a reverse Jock Scot, tied by the great Canadian tyer,so and so, and from my eyebrow a true Adams tied by the one and only, so and so.
Life would be great and full of laughs!
Now how does one create a market?
Should I get a rock star to wear them or a Hollywood star? At an awards show? Yeah that sounds great
Bye Y'all, I'm gonna be busy for a while!!

this is not lie...i was in a fly fishing store just last night and a young lady came up and was looking at the salmon flies. the clerk said, "looking for any fly in particualr?" and she says, "no, just pretty ones. i want them to make earrings."
(i just hope she doesn't swim with them on!)
