Dubbing Question
Hareline makes a dubbing called "Rainbow". It appears to contain at least 5 colors. Would you happen to know what type of synthetic is used for this dubbing? I would like to make a large batch as it is one of my favorite colors.
Thanks in advance,
Greg

Good luck with that...

They offer it in two shades, light and dark and from my experience, it is not the same or as effective as the two colors of Rainbow Sow Scud dubbing from Wapsi...
That being said, the flashy synthetic in both mixes appears to be similar to Lite-Brite, but Hareline probably orders it in bulk, from Asia, under a different name:

Thank you PT. It is the lighter shade color that interests me. I know it's a long shot but figured it's worth asking.
By the way, I love the midges you tie/fish ..... wonderful!

Agree with PT; the Wapsi product is far superior to Hareline's. I've been able to make it work if I use it in split-thread, although not on smaller flies, but it's really not worth the effort because the Wapsi is so much easier to dub with.

If I may be able to expand the question without a total hijack, if you are making dubbing from knitting yarn, how long should the pieces be cut. For some reasons 3/8" comes to mind.

Thanks Scott; I have a bag of the Rainbow dubbing and I cannot remember if it's made by Hareline of Wapsi.
Uncle Jesse, 3/8 inch is about what I cut when making dubbing, especially on the smaller flies.

I prefer the Wapsi dubbing & colours also. Here is their description from Bob Marriott's site. "This sparkling blend of opossum, super bright and antron..." super bright is nylon roving

Thank you Darwin .... that is very helpful.
