comparadun hair
I have been using comparadun hair to tie my haystacks. Last night I tied up a few BWO colored using comparadun hair died dun in color. This was the first time using this hair and I noticed a lot of dark, stiff hairs that didn't look as nice as the rest of the hairs. They kind of threw off the look of my flies. Won't affect their fish catching ability, but it bothers me. I tried picking them all out after stacking the clump of hair, but I missed some.
Has anyone else had a problem with the comparadun hair being inconsistent? The stuff I use is made by hareline.

I have a few packs of hair like that - didn't find any real good dyed stuff until I went to Blue Ribbon in West Yellowstone. I'd contact them or Charlie Craven if you're looking for high quality deer hair; I'm sure there are others but these are 2 shops I've dealt with.
Regards,
Scott

There's your problem, Terry - deer hair isn't 'made' by anyone, just supplied by them. You'll find different quality and consistency from patch to patch because of the differences in the original owner of the hide and where it was located as well as what time of year it was harvested and from which part of the body it was taken. So many variables to never guarantee 'consistency' when it comes to hair, especially deer hair. My advice is to look at the various pieces available at your local fly shop and find the one that best meets your approval, and hope you can find something similar the next time you buy. Good luck.

Blue Ribbon or Charlie
Have no fear! Either place will sell you quality deer hair from the best time of year and the right place on the body. I've never been left down. You can call them to make sure they understand your needs, and those needs will be met. Another great place to deal in hair is Whitetail Fly Tying owned by Chris Helms, the deer hair guru.
