I have a "fly trap", which is a dandy little gadget with a flip-down lid to hold your flies to dry them, and I think Simms makes a similar, but expensive kind of a pin-on fly box. Are there any other gadgets out there to hold your flies after you have used them? I don't like the wool patches because they are too good at holding the flies, and the pin-on styrofoam patches aren't good enough.
This works for me, I used to lose more flies off my vest than to trees. I keep a cheap,small plastic fly box in the top pocket of my fishing SHIRT, along with an empty film canister for collecting mono tippet and spinning. I drilled a number of holes in each compartment of the box. When I'm done fishing and have placed my vest and gear in the back of the truck, I'll remember the used flies in my shirt pocket. I'll either open it on the dash on the drive back or lay the box over my heater. I have lost so many barbless flies with all the other gadgets, or lost the box in the deep inner recesses of my vest when placed in there.
That's a great idea - will try it.
Just for pure convenience, low cost and it works. I took some heavier craft foam, about 5 mm, and made a fly patch which I attached to the back of my hat with some heavy thread at the corners, I may have added some light leather underneath for durability. It works well and I have never forgotten to take my hat unlike most other things I use fishing. I have a similar one on my "winter" hat.

I like my magnetic fly patch. Leave them on there for awhile, then put them back in the boxes before the next trip.
I use compartment boxes....and they go right back in them to dry.
Leave them in a couple of fly boxes around here somewhere.
I just don't fish them and I know I should!
Dries, emergers, a few streamers, and nymphs are all I carry.
What magnetic fly patch are you talking about, kid?

I like that idea, but, I have a concern that may not be a problem. If a person has a pacemaker, will the magnet be a problem? I am not familiar with pacemakers, but, seem to remember somewhere that a person with a pacemaker installed needs to be careful around any equipment that has a magnet.
Like I said, this may not be a concern, but, one can never be too careful. Just a thought.......

Glad I asked, all the replies for the "tight lines" magnet reminded me that I had one, and it's just what I need.
I made my own out of some really strong rare earth magnets. I used some small neodymium disks glued inside of a small container.
I got tired of loosing flies, so this was the answer. It holds them well. I use some tweezers or forceps to get them out of the container.
Be sure to grab them by the hook and not feathers.

I have the Fly Trap, but found it kind of heavy so only use it on my canoe bag. I did have to replace the foam so far. On my two chest packs I now use a C&F flypatch. Flies go into the slots butt first, so even barless hooks hold firm.
I also have a Streamworks which has a clip to put on your shirt (no holes) or a 'dog collar' clip. It is OK too.
And you can always take an old film container or pill tube, drill holes in is (and one in the top) and run an old piece of line though all so they don't get lost and pin it to your shirt or vest.
I agree that the dashboard of the car is a good place to dry out all flies on the ride home (keep them in the fly patch not loose!).
A ditto on the magnetic patch. If you are worried about a pacemaker, just attach it someplace out of the way -- like on your hat. I've never lost a fly from it.
Pacemaker on you HAT ? I think I want mine attached somewhere I can't leave it in the Diner . . .
Hmm. They have worked well for me for over 12 yrs using one patch. Granted herefishy, I fish barbless and don't usually go larger than #16 flies but I've not had any trouble.Quote:

I have used that for several years and love it. It seemed heavy in hand but once mounted on my vest I can't feel it. The only problem is that occasionally the magnet will grab nippers, hemostats and other metal gadgets left on th evest. No biggie, just pull them away.Quote:
