A couple of Sundays ago I got on a bed. I caught 12 nice gills, nearly on consecutive casts in a space no bigger than a half sheet of plywood.

Nice gills!

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but it seems like clearing the bed completely would put the future generations at risk...maybe if it's private water and an isolated incident it's no big deal.
I'm with Thwack on this one. You make it sound like you're getting rid of something undesirable like poison ivy or fire ants. While I've been known to keep a few bream for dinner once in a while, I've never intentionally cleared a bed of all fish. If you watch a bed after a fish has been taken from it, the smaller fish move in like Piranha to eat the eggs. I don't believe I would have taken more than 2 fish from an area that size. Not judging, just one man's opinion.

Is this a post just to get a reaction? That is my first thought as not many would be proud of "clearing a bed". Then wait a couple of weeks to post about it.
I would have fished to them, kept a couple if you want to, and then moved on to another spot.
Just my thought,

cal e batis i'm with you. this smacks of a troll post to me.
Here in KY, a lot of the ponds get overcrowded with bluegill if they're not harvested. In most ponds and lakes around here, I don't think it's likely clearing them out like he did will hurt the fishery. In fact, it may make it healthier.
Just a thought.

Jeff, you could be right. And I am sure it did not hurt the population one bit.
It was just how it was posted that made me think it was not real. No details, waited two weeks to post it.

No troll here. Our strip pits are so full of Gills that there is little to no chance of hurting the gill population. Think of the feeding of the roe the rest of the fish had. And I only waited to post because I haven't visited here for a while. If it had been a bed of bass, I would have turned them all loose.

Thanks for the followup clarifying the situation. I hesitated to even post since it could easily be taken too harshly. Glad to hear the rest of the story...I think it also helps future readers of this thread so folks understand the bigger picture as well.
Congrats on the nice stringer of giils.
