Madonna streamer - recipe
I have found two separate recipes for this fly online and I'm trying to figure out which one is the correct one per Ray Schmidt's original:
Recipe #1
Hook - streamer; 4X long, size 2-6
Thread - Yellow
Weight - lead wraps
Tail - none
Body - gold metallic braid over lead wraps
Wing - two 1 1/2 inch pieces of rabbit fur (Zonker strips) and two strands of flashbou
Head - spun deer hair clipped to shape, leaving a collar; color to match wing.
Recipe #2
Hook - streamer; 4X long, size 2-6
Thread - white
Weight - lead wraps
Tail - none
Body - silver metallic braid over lead wraps
Rib - gold metallic braid
Wing - 1 rabbit strip for size 6, 2 for size 4 or bigger, tied side-by-side; trailing 1 shank-length beyond the bend
Topping - 4 strands pearl Flashabou; wing length
Head - spun natural deer hair clipped to shape, leaving a collar
Which one is the correct one?
Re: Madonna streamer - recipe
According to the book "Modern Streamers for Trophy Trout" by Galloup and Linsenman it is:
Hook: TMC 300, sizes 2-8
Thread: Danville Super Strong
Body: Gold or Silver Mylar Tinsel
Wing: Rabbit Strip, color of choice
Underwing: 3 strands of pearl krystal flash
Collar: Deer Body Hair, color to match wing
Head: Deer Body Hair, color to match wing(clipped)
single rabbit strip for sizes 6-8, 2 rabbit strips, equal length, for sizes 2-4
It also notes to not make the rabbit strips too long. If the strips go past the bend in the hook they will foul.
