Dual Poppers
You all have my interest peaked now. As soon as the weather warms a little here I'll heading out to try some of these "poppers." I do have one question though. Is it possible or effective to fish with two poppers at once with a tippet-fly-tippet-fly (---------*----------*) set up? I have frequently fished for trout using two dries at once to help narrow down what is working quicker. Is it possible to do this with poppers or would it look unnatural to the fishies to have two bugs (?) doing the exact same thing in close proximity? I'm talking having like 24-36 inches in between flies.
One more question that just occured to me: What do most poppers imitate (excluding frogs cause that is obvious)?
Thanks in advance for the replies!

Re: Dual Poppers
Souldn't be a problem. Just use a nice heavy floating line with a stiff leader and use the heavier or more wind resistant popper as your point fly at the end. Once you can get this fly to turn over it will bring the other with it. Multiple flies doing th same thing shouldn't be a problem fish wise. I use different teams of flies all the time and catch fish on all the flies in the team.
If it becomes a problem you can always cut one popper off.

Re: Dual Poppers
I've fished a popper with a dropper but that is intriguing. Let us know how it goes.
My thoughts are that the popper stimulates the feeding response, "something is up there making noise, I'd better eat it"

Re: Dual Poppers
It might be difficult to get both poppers to "Pop". Any slack in the line between the 2, and only the front one will pop. The back one will probably just twitch. Not saying that;s a bad thing. 8)

Re: Dual Poppers
Interesting idea. I'll have to give it a try. I would use the set up Micropteris suggested. Small popper in front of a larger one. It depends on a the color of the popper. If you check out Cabela's and Bass Pro catalogs you'll see poppers with finishes that will imitate perch, shad and minnows. With those finishes a popper = a dying or injured baitfish. With the double set up, you have a small member of the food chain chasing a tiny member of the food chain, and you hope the small one will attract something higher up in the food chain.

Re: Dual Poppers
I may have to try that....I envision a popper up front trailing a sneaky pete.

Re: Dual Poppers
The only issue would be that your going to have to slow down and open your loops or suffer frequent tangles. The mass of the poppers make them behave differently at the end of a back/forward cast. Stiffer leaders will help but not totally cure it.

Re: Dual Poppers
that sounds like a really good idea because the second one wouldn't pop as strong as the firtst so the first one would attract the bass and then the quieter one would be like and injured one and the bass would go for the second one. you could even get a double :o

Re: Dual Poppers
Would it make sense to have a big popper trailing a smaller popper?
