Heavy reel needed
Hi all.
I was wondering if anyone hear could suggest a reel on the heavy side,(8-9oz), that is not real big or unreasonably priced. I have been searching for a while now, and all I seem to keep coming up with are knock offs that are extremely cheap, in price and quality alike. I have a six weight, fifty some year old South Bend that a good friend of mine, Curt Elder, recently refurbished for me. It is a beautiful rod and fishes very well, but I think it would be much more pleasurable if it were better balanced on the back end.
Any suggestions are welcome, as I am running into dead ends all over the place.

Re: Heavy reel needed
My suggestion would be to get yourself a Medalist or similar "classic" style reel
Before winding on any backing, fill the arbor with lead-core line or LC-13 until you reach an acceptable weight
To balance out an old cane rod, I use an old Bristol reel (6.5 oz.) that belonged to my grandfather
The old reels match up well with the heavy old rods
