No offense taken, but perhaps you haven't considered how you have benefited from these competitons.

I bet you fish with some of the advancements from the competitions such as bead head flies and the double haul. Competitor Marvin Hedge developed the double haul for the 1934 Casting Competition. Bead head flies were developed to sink flies because competitors cannot use any weight added to leaders or line.

The euronymphing technique directly resulted from Vladi Trzebunia, who won the 1989 World Fly Fishing Championship by the greatest point margin ever. His personal score was higher than the total score of the next three teams. He revolutionized European nymphing and in the last few years this method has spread to the USA. Anyone who uses the various new techniques of euronymphing has benefited. I use some of these direct line nymphing techniques and they have made me reconsider how to nymph in varying circumstances.

The special euronymphing flies are effective and the woven euronymphs are the result of competition.

These advancements in technique benefit everyone. I've never competed but I'm OK with it. I think the advancements from competition makes us all better fishers even if we ourselves don't compete.

Competitive fly fishing (or other competitive fishing) doesn't apeal to me personally. I can, however, apreciate the contributions of competitive fishing to overall fishing and I greatly respect the skill and dedication it takes to compete at that level....Way to go Team U.S.A.!!!
