Fish ID
Ah, cooler weather and lower humidity! Made it out for a couple hours today: some nice bluegills and a few greenies. One of the gills was chased by a BIG channel cat as I was playing him. The cat prowled around where I was for a while; I really don't like catching cats that much, plus I was fishing my 4wt and I wasn't up to fighting him on that so I avoided him. I also caught a few of these fellas, the first I've caught out of this water. They surprised me a bit, and I'm not sure what they are; some kind of shiner maybe?

Unless I'm mistaken, it's a shiner. Probably "stocked" by fishermen emptying their minnow buckets INTO that body of water, leading to many ponds being posted as "NO bait fishing with minnows".

Shiner. Possibly a golden shiner, but could be a common or striped shiner.
I've caught decent-sized shiners in smallmouth bass streams and trout streams.

I'm leaning toward a medium golden shiner. I've caught them on a fly rod up to 10-12 inches long in lakes up in Vermont.

Those fish (similar fish) provided a very entertaining morning on the Ca delta several seasons ago. We were catching them on small nymphs and tossing them to some bait fishers who impaled them and were tossing them to larger LM's on the boat ramp where the bass inhaled them..... much better than the BG's they had been targeting. ALL catch and release fishing.....well,sort of anyway....and very entertaining. ;-)
