I am tying up some patterns that call for a "very dark" blue hackle. these flies range in size from a 16 to a 14. What game bird provides hackle in the very dark blue shade in the smaller sizes.
The help is very appreciated as always.

Rookie,
For what fly?
I usually take that to mean a dun color (blue dun) and use a starling covert feather, which is a nice smokey gray.

Hi Ree,
Yes. It's the Iron Blue Nymph pattern as tied by Lawrie. I was just doing some checking and found out the Jackdaw is supposed to be dark blue, or at least have a lot of dark blue feathers on it. I would have sworn it was a very dark gray.
Can't swear to the body feathers as I only have a jackdaw scalp. The feathers on it are indeed a dark gray.

Ree, Mike, thank you both once again for the information.
After looking at Mike's picture, I may be adding a jackdaw to my arsenal of wet fly supplies. You can never have enough feathers.
