Fishing journals ??
Question for the group, ...
Do you keep a fishing journal?
If you do, ... what do you put into it?
Me, ... I like to just jot down dates, places, folks, comments. Nothing structured. Makes for fun browsing over the winter.
Recently, I've started to use a Blog, ... I'll see if I like it. http://fcchflyfishing.blogspot.com/[/url:eb5ea]
How 'bout y'all ??

I feel more like I do now than I did when I got here!

Jack,
I looked a long time for a way to do it ... the old one is at: http://www3.sympatico.ca/chris_chin/Journal/Journal.html[/url:70fd1]
(note: dead site,... I changed ISP's).
Then I realized, I could do it for free on the Blogspot site (and ever since they let Uploading photos, ... I can limit the space I use on my own little page) http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif

I use the following fishing log site http://www.tightlineslog.com[/url:40aed] . It's easy to use and search.

Chavez,
Wow, ... neat. That site has only been around since 2004, ... I guess that's why I didn't "hit" it before.

Reuel,
LOL, ... I guess my memory isn't as good.
I like to (need to) look back on "events". I don't need a catalogued dataBase, I remember the day, river (I only fish one http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif) etc. I just need help remembering say, the exact date (or year http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif), the name of someone, ... details.
Funny, ... I never need to look up WHICH fly I used or how I fished it.

I do keep a journal.
I keep track of the following;
1. Date.
2. Place fished, Name of Water and hole.
3. Time.
4. Weather,(Cloudy, sunny, rainy, etc.)
5. Air temp.
6. Water temp.
7. Humidity.
8. Wind, direction and speed.
9. Barometric pressure.
10. Water level.
11. Water Clarity.
12. "Hot fly(s)"and size.
13. Time fish started to hit.
14. Method fly was fished, swing,
dead drift etc.
15. Total fish caught and sizes.
16. Accompanied by, and fish they caught,
and flies they used.
I printed up a form and make copies
of it. Keep them in a 3 ring binder.
I can check out the weather stats
on the weather channel web page.
Just fill in the data!
To my suprise, sometimes the records
are very valuable. I can "tell" when
the fish may be active if i fish
under the same conditions I did on
a previous day. And then again.......
Also lets me keep track of my fish
per year, and fish per hour.

Wow! I must admit fellas I'm impressed. I've often thought about keeping a journal, but just never have. May have to give it some thought.
-
Chris,
Very nicely done. I use the same system, http://mendingline.blogspot.com/[/url:58cfe] but also keep my handwritten notes as the primary journal

Reuel,
Actually it's not complicating things.
I don't keep weather 'n stuff. Most of the articles I did (do) for the Canada section come right out of the journal http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif... so you can see the sort of info I jot down.
I like to be able to remember the date 'cause up here, (on my home waters), we go after sea run trout. The tides are probably the biggest factor on when the fish come in. (besides luck http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif).
John,
Very nice !! I like to jot down the info in the evening and put it up on the "blog" when I get the time.
