Wind's been blowing a week. Today the temps are in the 40s with gusts to 50. If I were to coil my line up on the bank, tie my fly to a rock... and throw it - would I still be "fly fishing"? :confused:

Even a small fish hooked in this wind would fight well if it jumps. Would probably be more like flying a kite than fishing...Might need to tighten your drag down. :D
you don't need to tie on a rock, just make sure the wind is at your back, tie on a fly coil 30-40 feet of line and leader in your non-rod hand throw it into the air and then when the wind takes it straight out, lay the rod tip down to the water. The alternative is a modified roll cast where instead of rolling it you just lift the line off the water high enough for the wind to catch it then you quickly raise the rod tip causing a wave to form in your line which the wind will Carry out the length of your line. give it a try I am sure you will enjoy the results. ;)

Might work eric.. but I think I'll still just coil the line on the bank. It would take both hands to hold the rod in the air. ;)
I used the throw cast at a pond in Idaho, it was a spring day the Ice was barely thawed and I realy needed to fish, didnt catch any thing but the wind burn added a nice glow to my face

With that kind of wind I would stay home and tie flys.
