OK I've gone over to the dark side, and would like to build a cane rod. Can anyone give me a good source for cane blanks? Hopefully an advertiser here. Thank you. RH Dang It's snowing like cats and frogs here this AM.

good question. I'll await the answer with you. Wrangler has loaned me a bamboo rod to use this summer just to get a feel for them. He's convinced once I try it I won't go back. JGW
I picked up a good blank on eBay. I bought it from Golden Witch. It was "in the string" which ment that I had to do a bit more work on it but that was fine with me. The price was right.
I have seen some boo blanks on Lewis and Clark website. Dont know if that's what your looking for though.

Coach,
Most rodmakers will build you just a blank. I'm not sure for certain about him, but first check with Harry Boyd, www.canerods.com.[/url:c61f7]
If Harry doesn't do blanks, www.codellas.com[/url:c61f7] has Terry Ackland blanks. Mark Fitch sells blanks on Ebay for good prices.
Best,
R

There are lots of rod makers that are good to get blanks from. Like many, I have bought some from rod makers that use E-Bay and have been especially impressed with the work of Mark Fitch (fitchM57). I have built 4 or 5 of his blanks and his work is excellent. I have purchased blanks from Tim Zietak on E-Bay as well and once again the work was excellent. Tim is highly thought of in the bamboo community and is especially competent in building quads. A.J. Thramer, Hal Bacon, Gary Williams, there are a lot of excellent makers that will do a great job for you in pricing that ranges from $200 up to $500 for a full set of blanks. I just built a Tim Zietak "Leonard 39H" 2/2 7 1/2' 4 wt and Tim charged me $275 for the ferruled blanks and I have to tell you that is an outstanding price. I am currently building a Mark Fitch 7 1/2' Dickerson copy 6 wt. and the blanks are second to none.
A lot depends on the taper you seek and the action that you would like. If you need contact information for any of these quality rodmakers, I can provide that.
If I was gonna build from a blank ( and don't think I haven't thought about it -- a lot)I would definatky consider A J Thramer. His work seems well respected, and I believe he makes clasic tapers, modified clasic tapers, and his own tapers. I get the impression he will talk to you and work with you to come up with the blank which suits your desires. I think he can be located through Clarks Bamboo forum http://p205.ezboard.com/bclarksclassicflyrodforum[/url:963ad] Which would be a good place to check out now that you have fallen to the seductive lure of bamboo.

I have built 7 of A.J. Thramers blanks and they are superb to say the least. AJ is a very accomplished rod maker and his machine work (ferrules) is excellent as well.
Has anyone built up one of these http://www.enigmacane.com/rods.htm[/url:2cf67]

EnigmaCane is Terry Ackland, as mentioned above.

Enigma Cane - Terry Ackland
Blanks are very well made, they are fast actioned and a good transition rod for a Graphite convert. His blanks are also impregnated, so there is no need to varnish anything more than the wraps. Would Recommended either Terry or AJ's blanks, both are high quality.

How (where)do you get Thramer blanks and does anyone know how to contact Mr. Thramer?
Thanks a lot.

a good quick outlet for Thramer blanks is Dave Henny as well. You might give him a shout. WWW.Davesrods.com.[/url:097c2]
Bill T, or, Harry Boyd.. both are good choices
Don't forget building a fly rod from a bamboo blank is slightly more work than building a graphite rod from a blank.
After you attach the cork handle, reel seat and guides (I'll assume that the blank is ferruled). You have to finish the rod with a varnish to make it water tight. That can be a trick to do so and have the rod come out looking good. Most rod makers will "dip" the rod in a tube of varnish and pull it out Slooooooow (like 1/2" a minute). Or many drain the varnish from a tube that the rod is hanging within.
Some rod makers will hand rub on the varnish or oil (like tru-oil). It's tricky to get that really nice looking finish. Brushing it on and having it look nice is next to impossible (for me anyway).
Don't let this stop you, but rather be aware of this step! It's a lot of fun to fish a bamboo rod (especially one you've worked on).

P.S. Typically, folks use the word "build" for assembling rod components and "make" for creating one from a raw culm of bamboo.
Ron Kusse!!
Just built my first 'boo rod after many graphite rods. I found eBay sellers Golden Witch, Mark Fitch and Gary Williams to have good quality and prices. Mine was from Gary:

Casts very nicely, even compared to my graphite rods (action vs weight)...wrps still need a little clean up but I am happy with the quality of the blank. Gary installs the ferrules and applies several coats of varnish which saves a lot of work.
