Jim Hatch ..punching
OK Jim,...or anyone...
I've got back to my toys and I happen to have the open punches you talk about [harbor Freight] for punching foam...tried one that would fit in my drill press...yes it flipped out the foam plugs but who knows where...how do you gather them????

Attach a stripping basket under the table of your drill press?

Hi Ya Duck,
Dodging foam bullets huh? Heh heh. The
first thing I did was open the drive box at
the top of my drill press and set it up for
low rpm. Then when I'm drilling the plugs I
cup my left hand next to the bit while
holding the foam in place. They all just
drop to the bench to the right of my drill
press.
I found a set of 12 of the center core
punches from 1/8" up to 3/4 inch. I swapped
a machinist friend of my son a dozen foam
flies to turn the larger punch shafts down
to fit my 1/2" drill press. Was a sweet
deal for the both of us.*G*
Hope they work for you as advertized. Best
tool I've found for making the plugs. I
took a piece of foam from a garden kneeling
pad and made a tool caddy for the punches
by chucking each punch in order and punching
out hole with it in the pad. Keeps them
neat on the bench.*G* Warm regards, Jim

I solved the proble by placing a shoe box on the drill press and punching my plugs inside.
The finished plugs still fly out at any angle, but they stay within the box.

Thanks guys..
Jim, do you remember where you found the 12 piece set? I've been looking for bigger than 1/2" punches...Lowes and Home Depot don't even know what I'm talkng about.
I've got a friend who'll turn down the stems...think I'll have him do 3/8" to also fit a hand drill...not sure why though...
Kengore, so you put the flip flop in the shoe box?...do you just cut through the card board as you go through?

Hey Duck,
Yes I do remember. I got the 12 piece
set at the Ladson Flea Market. There used
to be a vendor that specialized in chinese
tools. Price was about $6. Don't know
where he is now though.*G* Warm regards, Jim
