Jackson, MS Area?
Just curious...anyone out there warmwater flyfishing in the Jackson, MS Metro and surrounding area?
I did many years ago, and got into other things, and now that my oldest son is 10, he's really taken a liking to fishing with me and is interested in fly fishing. Just curious who's out there.
Alan.

Google "Chunky River, MS". It's off I-20 east towards Newton. Haven't fished it, but have heard a lot of good things about it. I think they stock it with trout at certain times of the year.

There are several thousand farm ponds around Jackson, most privately owned. The best way to get info on farm ponds are through folks at churches and schools. Mississippi also has a good system of lakes operated by the Game and Fish folks and the state park department. I am going to assume you are in the of the communities surrounding Jackson. I know there is a member of the board in Ridgeland and another in Clinton, neither has been very active recently. Maybe they will see this and respond.
The links below will show you the state operated parks and lakes. Just a word of warning, the state parks usually allow the presence of beer and the state operated lakes do not, at least that is the way it used to be. Both will probably have jon boats w/o motors to rent and maybe canoes.

Currently there are four International Federation of Fly Fisher clubs in Mississippi, and there may soon be a fifth.
The Magnolia Fly Fishers is based in Jackson. This club was founded in 2001 and has a number of knowledgeable and talented fly fisher, many of whom fish across Mississippi. These folks regularly fish for warm and saltwater species across Mississippi, and are known to regularly make trips to Arkansas for coldwater trout and to Louisiana for reds and specks (that is when they're not fishing for those species on the Mississippi coast).
Local outdoor writer, Glen Davis, maintains a blog filled with excellent articles on fly fishing in Mississippi that are more than worth your time, whether you live in the area or not. Here is article on how Glen and his friends in the Magnolia Fly Fishers pioneered fly fishing for stripers in the Mississippi River: blogs.clarionledger.com/gdavis/author/gdavis/page/4/
Another member of the Magnolia Fly Fishers, and locally known fly tyer, David Frazier, worked with the University of Mississippi Media Documentary Project University of Mississippi on a video about a classic Mississippi stream, the Chunky River: http://vimeo.com/channels/flyfishing/54793912 A viewing of this short video will show you a bit of the beauty of the Magnolia State's fly fishing locales and why this southern state is renowned for her numerous ponds and sandy bottoms streams.

Seems like I remember Chris Haddad recently assuming a position of fly tyer at the new Orvis shop. The store is in Ridgeland. Stop in and talk with Chris, he used to hang out here but has been AWOL for a while, good guy.
