Variant Hook
in the 70's I purchased a "variant" hook #9479 made by the Mustad folks. Anyone know if there is an equivalent hook on the market today? I could only find a "scud" hook that is somewhat the same shape. I used this style hook to tie the variant patterns found in Art Flick's classic "Streamside Guide".

Howdy Fritz... I've been using some hooks made by Daiichi that have a curved shank somewhat like scud hooks. I got them in quantities of 25 from a local fly shop, then found them online from Hook & Hackle, one of our sponsors here at FAOL. I vaguely remember the hooks you're talking about, I do remember using them way back. I recommend you have a look at H&H or Daiichi's websites and see what you can find. I used Daiichi #1273, "curved hooks"
I hope I've helped..........................ModocDan

Fritz,
Not sure if Mustad has changed its numbering scheme since the 1970's, but a quick google search indicates that currently the #9479 is a 5XS 1XF "Viking" bend hook designed for midge and egg patterns. If we are talking the same hook, looks like you should still be able to buy this hook (a quick web search will turn up plenty of candidates). You could always email Mustad for a definitive answer (custserv@mustad-usa.com).
The Daiichi #4250 makes a 5XS 1XF hook but it has an up eye. If I had to find a substitute, I'd probably use a Tiemco TMC2488, a 3x wide, 2XS, 1XF hook, which should be close enough.
Luck.

Still made in sizes 6 - 10.
We use a 94840 for Flick's Variants, we also have samples tied by Flick and they are not tied on short shank hooks.

I believe the slightly shorter hook recommended for Flick's variants was
a Mustad 94838 that they no longer list.

PM Dr. Fish. He is the Mustad sales representive and a hook designer.

Kanasan B405 would be a suitable replacement for Mustad 94838 I think.
The specs seem to be the same but that does not mean alot.
