"Page 42" swap
Okay, here's an original idea for a swap:
I know I'm not the only angler to receive LL Bean's Spring Fishing catalogue. If you open it to page 42, you'll see a nice selection of terrestrials and nymphs from Umpqua.
These flies are nice, but a bit pricey for me. So I thought to myself: "Self, what if you got your FAOL friends to tie some of these for you instead of buying them?"
As this was one of the more rational things I had said to myself this morning, I latched on to it. Thus the birth of the "Page 42" swap. Details below:
-Five participants (four + me)
-One pattern each, but three sizes, so 15 flies total (five of each size)
-Pick any pattern on Page 42 of the LL Bean Spring Fishing Catalogue; terrestrial or nymph.
- If the pattern you choose only comes in two sizes, then just add a third size, logically one just larger or smaller than those listed.
-Send flies to me in a crushproof container with SASE or postage no later than Feb. 11th. Yes, that's only three weeks away.
-I'll sort and send them back ASAP.
-I'll send my contact information and mailing address separately after sign up is complete. Sign-up deadline will be 1/28, next Saturday.
For clarification and to get started, I'll tie a Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear Natural in sizes 12,14 and 16.
Happy tying. Let me know if I've left anything out.
1. Ed Schuurman - Hare's Ear Nymph 12,14,16 - done
2. Night Angler - TBD
3. BadBug - Lawson's Emerger
4. gqualls - FBPT nymph 14,16,18 - recv'd
5. mikeytwoshoes - Lafontaine's Emergent Sparkle Pupa - recv'd

Hey Ed...
I love this idea.. I just order a catolog.. I dont know if I'll have it in time to enter the swap... But I really would like to.. I even looked on the website and the pages didnt come enough for me to really see the flies...
Next.. is it just the flies on page 42 or 42 and 43??
-
Hi Ed -- I'll try the Lawson's Caddis Emerger. Oops! ---- forgot the sizes - #14, #16, #18.

Hey there Night Angler and BadBug. Nice to have you aboard.
Night Angler- I was planning just Page 42. If you feel REALLY motivated to do one from page 43 you could probably get away with it.
Dennis- Nice to have you back. What happened to retirement from swaps?

Ed, that's one of the good things about being old & senile - SOMETIMES I forget that I gave this up.

Night Angler-
No problem. If you would like to participate but don't get the catalog, I can send you a list of the flies and hook sizes. LL Bean is usually pretty prompt with their shipments, though.
Ed
-
Ed,
I'll tie if it's not to late. How 'bout some size 14,16,18 flashback pheasant tail nymphs?
GQualls
-
G-
Sure thing. Glad to have you aboard. I'll send you an e-mail with my shipping address once one more person signs on.
Ed
-
I can't decide if I should get into this one, so I will leave it up to chance. I don't have the catalog either, but I checked it out online. If the tungstun soft hackle is on pg 42 I would like to join. If it is not on pg 42, it wasn't meant to be.
Ned
-
looks like I missed out.
too bad. cool idea.
mgj
-
Not so quick Mickey, I am honest when I say if the tung soft hackle isn't on 42 it ain't ment to be.
Ned
-
Wouldn't you know it ... woke up last night at the end of a REM and couldn't go back to sleep for nothing. Decided to get up and tie the flies for this swap. Got them finished and was pleased. Got on the board tonight and noticed I had signed up for a flashback pt. As pretty as the flies looked, they lacked one thing .... the flash. Here we go again. lol
-
G-
I'm good with the PT's w/o flash. I know that quality time at the bench is sometimes a matter of divine intervention. If you'd rather not tie up another batch, I'm sure we'd survive "sans" flash.
Ned-
Technically, the tungsten soft hackle is not on page 42. However, since you were the first to show interest, I think it's fair to allow you a chance to join in if you wish to select a different pattern. If not, I'll see if Mikey still wants to play.
Ed

Ed
If it ain't on 42 it ain't ment to be. Pass the opportunity on to Mikey.
Good luck with the swap. Next year I will be ready with a catalog! http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif
Ned

Ned-
Your graciousness is appreciated. I'll contact Mikey and see if he wants to play.
Ed
-
If it's ok with everyone I'm gonna' send the pt's sans flash and also 3 of each size with flash.
-
I will play.
I need to consult the catalog before choosing a pattern. thanks ned and ed.
ned, email me your mailing address and I'll tie up and send a set your way in thanks.
mgj

G-
Thanks. I'll be looking forward to your package.
Mikey-
You're in. Let me know when you decide on a pattern.

Leonard-
I sent you a private e-mail with the pattern list from page 42. I've not yet gotten your read receipt from that message. If the e-mail link from your FAOL profile is no longer valid, please let me know a viable alternative.
Thank you.

Ed,
Sent the flies out yesterday; you should get them before the weekend. Thanks for hosting the swap.
-
I hate too do this.. but if you all will allow me to take the easy way out...
Do you all mind if I do the midges..
I still havent got the catolog.. but I can tell there is a larva midge on there.. cant make out the sizes.. so I'll do 18-24's.. so everyone will get a extra set.. probably in black..
Is this ok with everyone???
-
No problemo-
It fits the rules: any pattern from page 42. I'm sorry you haven't gotten the catalog. We're glad to have you aboard.
Don't fret. I've caught a whole bunch of fish on "simple" midge larvae.

Took my flies to the P.O. this morning for the trip East.

as of today..Flies are in the mail
-
Received Dennis' flies today!! As usual, an excellent job. They look as good as, or better than, those from Umpqua.
Night Angler's flies should be here soon. He's let me know that they're coming, so I'll distribute them all as soon as his arrive.
Ed
-
I received the last set of flies today. These are a really nice set of larva midges from "Night Angler". He even threw in an extra size for us all. Thanks for the "extras" too.
These midges work great - simple, yet deadly.
I'll be sorting the flies today and make sure they make it out in the mail first thing Monday morning. Thanks to all for your good work, and for the quality of your flies. I'm no longer suprised, but still impressed.

Hey Ed...
That little brown scud.. try it.. let me now how it worked..
-
I'm really looking forward to trying it on a special spring creek around here with some very fussy, and very large, brown trout.
Is it tied with ostrich herl?
Ed
-
nope... the white egg is...
but the brown one is the roo bug
