So what do you do?
A followup from the Handle/signature thread, (Andr? posted the same thread on Dennis' this morning). [url=http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/Forum13/HTML/000809.html:477ce]http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/Forum13/HTML/000809.html[/url:477ce]
So what do you do to pay for your fishing http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif
Most of you know I'm a forester (who only gets into the wood about 5-6 times per year now for the job). I worked on many forest management information systems and now I manage some public lands up here for a large building products company.
I guide part time on weekends and holidays to pay for toys.
Volunteering for some other groups takes up the rest of the time.
How 'bout you??

I am in school. I did own a business for a long time and have been fly fishing for over 25 years, which means 25 years of collecting. My newest rod/ reel is 5 years old, and I don't think I have bought material other than hooks for 5 years. As for the actual fishing, I live on a fantastic river in Montana, so my fishing trips are nothing more than a short walk from my house (biggest fish within 100 yards of the house is 4 lb brown). I would say that I am living the dream, but I would also say that because everything is so accessible, I do not fish as much as I once did. I guess what I am saying is that as flyfishing has become more expensive, I have thankfully missed most of the increased expenses and remain a cheapskate.
-
I started out working construction when I was in school. I'm now a Project Manager for a engineering consulting firm.
I live on one of VAs tidal rivers and do most of my fishing there but grew up fishing the mountain rivers/streams for trout and smallies. Been flinging flies since I was about 8, got more serious at about 17 and have really gotten into it over the last 2 years or so.

I work on high voltage equipment. In the winter I am in the shop repairing elctronic controls that operate big breakers in power substations. In the summer, I travel to different electric cooperatives around the midwest and test, maintain, and repair the breakers (really called reclosers) in the customer's substations.
I work around a lot of dangerous voltage, but I like the work and the travel takes me near some decent fishing.

Well, born and raised in SW Wyoming, 1st thru 6th grade at Powder Wash camp on the Wyo.-Colo. border. 7th and 8th at Hiawatha camp, I was the only student in my junior high!
Neither camp exists anymore, automation.
Am an oilfield brat, Mt, Fuel Co. which is now Questar, is whom my Dad worked for.
Moved to Rock Springs in '66' to start high school, '70' graduate.
Worked construction for two years, started with FMC corp. in '72' and have been here ever since.
Married into a ranching family in '74' which just helped to feed my need to be OUTDOORS!!
My job is controlroom operator, official title is Chief Power Operator, so I don't get outside very often except on days off which makes these 12 hr. shifts nice, get more days of to play!!
Am very fortunate to have a wife who indulges my desire for camping and any thing out of doors, she has the same needs, just doesn't fish or hunt. She picked the tent we use for camping, and we share the cooking duties when out.
Also am within an hour, no more than two, of some of the best trout fishing around. Just haven't figured out Flaming Gorge Reservoir yet. It has some nice small mouth bass in it, I just can't seem to catch anything when I'm on it!!
Do volunteer work, Hunters Ed. instructor, also Knights of Columbus, MR. Santa Clause, am pretty busy this time of year, and the wife and I am constantly documenting any birds of prey, Hawks, Eagles, etc. we see for the BLM bird surveys we got involved in twenty years ago. Yea, a ranching family working with the BLM, surprises the wife also. It is also another excuse to be OUT in the wild. The wife gets very jealous when I can go during the week, she teaches sixth grade at Holy Spirit Catholic School so only has weekends and the summer to play.
As of April of 2007, finally figured the Gorge out! Not fly fishing, but actually have caught some fish in the darn place!
Work some overtime now and again to pay for toys and trips.

I am a 100% service connected disabled ex-USAF vet and living on a fixed income. I've learned to make do with as little as I need so I can afford what I need to fish with. I belong to at least 3 different clubs and am the active president of one of them. My fly rods are nothing fancy but they are mine and I enjoy fishing with every one of them. My "home" waters is the Little Red River which is about a 45 mile drive from where I live. I travel to my parents at least twice a year to fish waters where I grew up too many years ago and I meet with a FAOL board member and we fish together as often as possible when I am there.

I spent 20 years in the military and now am a manager at the local Lowe's HIW. Working retail means I get precious few weekends off, but that's OK because the lakes and the one trout stream close to me are all but deserted during the week.

I am a low voltage electrical systems designer. Fire alarm, intrusion alarm, access control, PA, intercoms, data network infrastructure, phone systems, audio and video system, television, and the list goes on. I work at an engineering firm that produces contract drawings and specifications for the construction of building. Hospitals, schools, institutional buildings and such. I love that I get paid to draw, and the systems are really neat to see perform at the end of a job. I still feel really lucky when I get a paycheck every two weeks. So I have accomplished my high school goal; to get paid to ski, fish, and draw! I have guided, as a ski racing coach in the winter, and now draw systems desings for a living.
Have fun, Jeff

I am an Account Manager for a local telephone company. I work with business customers setting up business telephone systems, high speed networks etc.
I have been a fisherman all my life and grew up fishing warmwater lakes and streams. I started flyfishing while in high school but got away from it for awhile. I have back into flyfishing in a bigger way the last year.

I am a industial wastewater engineer. I protect those beloved streams/rivers and watersheds we all love. I specialize in removing heavy metals from wastestreams primarily zinc, nickel and chromium. It's a great feeling by working to keep pollutants out of water systems. It's also my way of giving something back to streams and wildlife that have gave me so many years of enjoyment

I'm an elementary school teacher. Now don't go thinking that I have 3 solid months of fishing time every year. I have to keep my certification up, I also teach a class on using nature to other teachers, and I have to keep up with the honeydo list my wife thinks up during the school year. But I do admit to getting in some good fishing time during the summer months. Having taught for 27 years, the school district sent me a letter this week outlining the early retirement benefits. Sure with I could afford it - still have one kid in college yet. Someday, though.

I've been a carpenter for 34 years, the first 10 in residential, the last 24 in commercial. I have also worked as a carpenter foreman and job superintendant on some of our bigger jobs. Most of the work we do these days is remodeling office space. Occassianaly we get some new construction, usually a bank or church, but not often.

I work for in the freezer for a local ice cream distibutor. Its really a nice and cozy -15 or so year round.....LOL. Yeah you do get used to it, I've been there for over 3 years now so I better be used to it by now. Its kinda funny when you walk in the freezer and its warmer in there than it is outside. Luckily I live in MT so I have loits of fishing oppurtunites and frequently in the spring and summer go out to fish either the Gallatin or the Madison (spring only) if I get off work at a reasonable time http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif

I've been a stay at home dad for about the last three years, which doesn't leave me nearly as much time for fishing as you might think. However, next year my daughter will be in first grade so she will go to school a full day. I should get some fishing in then!!

I'm retired from the Army and just retired again from a 2nd career in hotel/motel brokerage. Along with the Mrs, I probably fish close to 100 days a year either at Taneycomo or a few other Missouri waters. Also do a lot of fly tying which is great for getting through the winter

What do I do to pay for my fishing??? Not very much--I retired as an engineer designer of those big trucks you see on the highway 18 years ago.Always had all the fishing equipment I ever wanted with a well stocked pond in my back yard full of big gills and bass. I put in 2000 each 4 inch long 5 years ago that are now 9 inch gills and 14--20 inch bass
Great place for all the kids I teach.

Chris,
Once upon a time I was just a fisheries biologist for the Tennessee Valley Authority. With cutbacks in staff and reduced budgets, I am now a fisheries/wildlife biologist, part-time forester, part-time water quality "guru", part-time NEPA document writer, and part-time permit reviewer for folks requesting facilities on the Tennessee River. Jack-of-all trades; master of none! Work demands provide precious little time for fishing and there are no sustainable trout populations within 100 miles of my West Tennessee location. I do have access to some fine warmwater fishing on Kentucky and Barkley Reservoirs. However, retirement is visible on the horizon and I intend to make the most of it!

I work for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. I travel the entire state of PA working in the courthouses helping the staff there as required.
Yep, I carry a fly rod with me everywhere I travel, so I get to fish after work almost every day. I travel about 40 weeks a year, so I tie in the hotel when I'm not fishing.
Great job if you can handle the boredom of hotels every night.
Biggest problem I have is explaining to my boss why I carry 2 suitcases (1 has my gear in it!).

I'm an electrical engineer in a paper mill that makes the paper to make boxes. This career comes after a career with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) doing Environmental Biology and Aquaculture Research. Unlike garyj147, I got my walking papers during all the cutbacks which forced a career change. The down side is the job eats up a lot of the time to fish. The upside is that I'm currently located a little over an hour from some pretty good tailwater trout fishing in Oklahoma.
-
I currently run a fly shop and have been guiding for the last 16 seasons in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Alaska, Wyoming and Kamchatka. I grew up in Seattle area. I have lived here in Teton Valley for the last 8 years. Been tying and flyfishing for the last 31 years.

I am Ex Coast Guard 1968-1975 . I retired as a Flight Service Specialist 5 years ago . I just turned 60 last year so the Government sends me an extra stipend each month on top of my regular pension , which I use for the extra goodies that we fly fishers need . Perhaps want is a better word than need .
For all those who advised me never to retire because I'd be bored to tears . WHAT ARE YOU NUTS ?
I just love it , it lets me fish when I want too !

As the rx in my username implies I am a pharmacist in St. Louis Missouri. I work in a hospital on an ICU satellite at Barnes Jewish Hospital. I work in the evenings covering 5 ICU's which include our surgical icu (SICU), medicine (MICU), cardiac (CCU), neuro (NNICU), and a cardiology step down unit, where the patients go after they have an MI and are stabalized. Mostly I provide medications (they are usually IV's) and I answer questions from doctors and nurses, reccommend therapies, etc... We are really involved here and get respected pretty well by the staff.

I did the job start to finish the only thing we needed the dealership for was to reset the air bag light in the dash. as you need to talk to the computer in the car for that. and i pass two great rivers on the way to and from work and get to fish them quite often great for stress relief!

Garyj147, there are a number of trout streams within 100 miles of Dresden, TN. I went to school at UT Martin and I fished in Hurricane Creek and Yellow Creek a number of times. There were some very large trout in Yellow Creek. There are a number of other streams too. You have to head east of the Tennessee River, but not all that far. It's all stocked rainbows, but in some streams there are reproducing populations.
There were also rumors of a spring creek in west Tn, not all that far from Martin. I did see a gravel-bottomed stream that met the description, but it was very late at night on a fraternity outing and I never found it again. I don't think that it was a dream, because a couple of other guys commented on it too.

I'm a "bill collector"!!!
Worked in medical credit management for many years, & collected/repo'd in 5 states prior to that. Got outta management as I can't play politics & I figure folks having a financial "setback" need an advocate who looks out for THEM!! With any luck at all, I'll get to help 'em with the $$$ & then get to fish with 'em!

Very interesting guys! I'm a paramedic manager in a small town and own a farm where I raise some sheep and cows. I am near some great volcanic lakes, so while my family with two little girls comes first, my fishing comes a distinct second. (Maybe my wife would put it the other way around.) I love fishing the lakes, but also spend some time in the mountains on what you would call freestone streams, about 6 hours drive from here.
Like a lot of you blokes, my life gets a bit crazy work wise, and the fishing bit seems to put me in touch with something really special, but I can't explain it any better than that. You all know what I am talking about though.
By the way, Merry Christmas everybody, be safe, keep well, and enjoy.

I'm retired and loving it! (right gnu be?!)
40 years in automitive! The last few as a tooling engineer on large (80,000#) injection molds.
3 pensions and a meager income as an Administrator for our local Moose Lodge keep me in goodies.
My favorite river is the Little Manistee. I'm less than an hour from the Pine, the Pere Marquette, the Muskegon and the AuSable is only 80 miles away.

I am a computer geek. I direct the IT efforts of a small healthcare back office (we do the work). Do networking, programing, project development and strategic planning. I now work one day a week from home which gives flexibility to take a long lunch time and fish during that day. Otherwise its usually first thing in the AM before work or an occaisional weekend outing.
