Can you start another fun thread????
I agree;
This time we can try to keep it about fly fishing. And pirates. And And and and
Here is a question. What did you learn from or about fishing this season.
One thing I learned is to sleep with an eye open and a knife nearby when sharing a room with a pirate like DMicus
jed
but jed, i still managed to steal your credit cards...
I learned how much I missed it while I was sick. I learned just how much this board means to one of us when we are sick.
How many of these people stopped what they were doing just to let me know I was cared about.
I also learned that up north they catch frozen fish. And that some people in the cold north will do anything to fish. Can you imagine cutting holes in ice to fish? <grin>
Harold
Thats why my cards are all maxed out. You...you.... you PIRATE you!!
I learned how to nymph successfully. After 35 yearts of fishing, and having minimal successs nymphing I decided last year to learn how to fish nymphs. I did not do it last year, but this year, starting at the fish-in in Deerfield I got the hang of it. I learned the Lisenring (high sticking) technique, then got proficient with other methods as well. My catching has increased so that it is a rare day I go out and get skunked.
I have also met face-to-face several people from this board and found with the exception of DMicus all of them are fun to fish with.
Not a bad year, all-in-all
jed
Yea, but you found I was fun to drink with!
I learned to never leave the pfd in the kayak when fishing the shore.
Where do you think all the ice comes from to keep your drinks cold? It just so happpens that once the ice is out you can pull a fish through the hole. Be careful though your pegleg might go through a thin spot, not much surface area to spread the weight out.

Who has time for stress when there are fish to catch.
Nick
I learned that a midge dropper off of a floating fly will catch a ton of gills.

I learned to swim while learning to watch for holes whilst wading!
AAAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHn't you proud of me?
cheers
Adam
I learned that Josko is maybe the best fisherman I've ever met.
I also learned there is salt water fishing in Ohio. (Ha, that never gets old, does it tuber?)
I learned not to bet against pats man. (By the way if you see this they are on the way. I just finished up another 75 hour work week.)
I learned that there's no good in an evil hearted woman, and I ain't cut out to be no Jessy James.
I learned that some people hate for no reason, other than to hate.
I learned that life is short, so live it while you can.
I learned how to make a pirate noise
AAAAAAAA
RRRRRRRR
GGGGHHHH
Hey, I think I'm getting the hang of this.

swen:
After catching a snook on the first try you do not worry about making the correct noise. We may all start taking lessons from you. Congrats on the snook. They are fun to catch.
Harold
I learned (from another post) that Micus wears a thong!
I also learned that Ohio is NOT a good place to shop for a gaff (for landing all those saltwater bluegills!).
Mike
fishigan, i heard a nasty rumor that you bet ON the dolphins AGAINST the patriots. I didn't believe it...no one that was clever enough to conceive the elitist-schmeetist thread could have made such a sucker bet...
but it is good to see you back.
and, Mike, I'm sure glad you qualified your statement with "from another post"!!!!

I learned that I had no call to use my baitcaster (with 9/0 trebled hooked Daredevil) this year, as the Jet Skier's run away when I hoisted my pirate flag
.....Arggghhhhhh!
Pirate Parnelli http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung...smiley-082.gif
I was betting based on 2 things. 1) heart.
2) statistically they would win. The Dolphins had never lost their first 4 games.
But...the one good thing comming out of this is the coach is gone. They only thing I couldn't figure is why they tried to get him to stay for the rest of the year? Then again it could be they really didn't, but just wanted it to look like that.
Micropteris----"ice to keep my drinks cold" had fish in it before it was frozen??? Ugh, I just can imagine what those silly fish were doing in my "ice for my drink"!! Fornicating, defacating, postulating, oh my gosh, no wonder I get a headache after I use that defiled ice to chill my Ketel One Vodka. Tsk, tsk.

Snow on the roof with fire in the hearth
I'm looking forward to ice fishing this year.
Finally broke down and got a sled shanty.
Figured if the boy is going with me I gotta keep him warm. He's a fine ice fisher.
Also get to try out some new ice fly patterns I have been working on.
Fishingan, it's tough casting into that little hole in the ice, no?
And I can feel your pain with the dolphins. I am a life long bears fan (wanstadt's previous team. he has to have the worse win/loss percentage in the history of pro football). alcohol helps...
Dave,
You don't know anything about ice fishing! You don't cut a hole, you cut a slit in the ice about 20 - 30 feet long, then you can cast, DUH!
jed
Jed
I haven't tried cutting a slit yet. But I was wondering. Are you an up slit and dry fisher or down and wet?
First ice is like getting gills on the beds in the spring. After that it tends to be more know how and skill.
But I would have to guess that it is pretty
well always cold...or do you have one of those schmeetist heated ice fishing houses?
Dave
I happen to have a schmeetist portable ice fishing house. Being one of the upper crust ice fisherman, it can comfortably accomodate two anglers along with their schmeetist ice fishing equipment. I take along with me portable coleman heater and lantern. And of course some schnapps.
evil dave, say it ain't so! you??!! a schmeetist ice fisherman???!!!
now here's a question--is it actually fun or just a way to fish through the winter? inquiring minds want to know...
For me, ice fishing is a way of being with my children (ages 17-25). They like to be out on the ice, build fires on the ice, drill holes, run around and check the tip-ups when they are up. I enjoy the being outside and being with them and friends. As for the fishing part, well its bait fishing and slow at that. Not what I would choose to do without some social interaction to make it worth while.
jed
Dave in all honesty for me it is just something to do. And yet it can be fun. I enjoy fishing so much that it beats not fishing at all.
It can be a pain dragging all that stuff out on the ice and then dragging it all back to the truck when I'm done. If I didn't have a portable ice shelter, I probably wouldn't go.
and i guess the beer stays cold? so it can't be too bad...
I was a low class bucket setter for 10 years. This will be my first year with a shanty. Only reason I even got a shanty was because my 9 year old son went a couple of times last year and he loved it. Well I can set out in the cold and fish all day and he is a trooper but, I would never forgive myself if he got frost bite because there was no shelter.
I love to ice fish. As for it being a bait sport I have to disagree. I have used bait for many years but I am now working on several ice fly patterns that will use no bait. It is mostly uncharted territory.
fishigan, sounds like you have an article for one of the fishing mags! since they've managed to cover everything else!
To do them right you have to have some knowledge of ice fishing for pan fish. The biggest obsticle to over come was getting the color scheme properly done. Such as lets say one of the best jigs to use is chart. and orange with gold flake. Well generally it would have chart. on one side with the orange on the other with the gold flake on the orange side. Not exactly an easy task when tying them out of natural materials. However I have made a couple of brake-thru developements. Then try doing a tequilla sunrise, that has four colors in inside to outside order. I have a pretty good thing going for blending the colors properly. There are other things that I have been working out too. It has been fun and when the ice hits I'll find out what works and what doesn't. At least on the lakes I fish.

If any of you "piraschmeetists" are up around Kalamazoo in January give a holler and I'll be more than happy to guide ya on the frozen water. Pike, Perch, Crappie and Gills are whats on the menu.
Hmmm....planning a trip to Kalamazoo in January....I might do that if I was from the arctic, otherwise it's someplace warm! http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif
hey, only about 215 posts to go to catch up with "shmeetist"...
I learned a new word, "piraschmeetist." This is my new favorite word and I plan on fitting it into every conversation I can manage to join. If you want to hear it the way it should be said, put your cutlass between your teeth, draw your lips back, and say it. Piraschmeetist.
argh
pirashmeetist is going right on my list of favorite words, along with curmudgeon, raconteur, and pecadillo...
Try saying piratshmeetist after having a few rums. Wonder what it would sound like?
I think I might use it as a preamble at my seance. Piratshmeetist, piratshmeetist, pirateshmeetist. Norman McClane are you there?
Evil Dave, Norman Maclean here...
Norman! Thank goodness. Wow this seance thing really works. Now tell me something. When you wrote ARRTI, was it fiction, biographical fiction, autobiographical fiction, an autobiography, or autobigraphical biography?
