I caught a Fish so big once I couldn't weigh it.
Took a picture of it and the picture weighed 20LBS! (My Dad)
I'd say your about 2 hours away? I usually fish chittenango creek and just moving here I'd like to try oneida lake this summer. My wife has relatives in Rockdale Center' which I think is about 45 min from you. Ever fish the susquahanna(Spelling)?
Yes have fished the river here for 35yrs but not by Fly.
They stock some of the creeks here with Trout and I fish a few ponds for Bass and Panfish by fly.
Sometime I'd like to try the river with a Fly and see what happens.
Most of my Best Trout fishing is around Deposit up to Roscoe area.
Some of my area exploits are pictured here

I only started fly fishing last summer but I live down in Ithaca. Feel free to email me to arrange some fishing time if you like.
I'm just about as far as I can get from you in the Lower 48, but my Godfather just moved up there. His girlfriend sent me a Horrocks-Ibbotson rod from Utica.

Is About 5,000 miles too far ?
Diane, I may just do that, and Battenkill_Jim, your not TOO far away for some weeked fishing. I do many kinds of fishing, Mostly trout with a few lightweight rods, just wanting to try my hand at Flyfishing as I got a shakesphere rod/reel used for $20. LOL, I know, Its not the best rod but for $20 I thought that a good price to introduce myself to the sport. All are welcome up my way too for fishing as I have had luck at numerous spots. Im new to NY and always did Catfishing in Ohio off the Ohio River and ponds, But Im growing addicted to trout fishing. I tried Ice fishing, and well........it's just too damn cold. > http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif>

Channel Cats in the "Sus" river are fun.
Chicken Livers are the bait of choice!
Carp range in 5lb-10lb range and might be fun on the Fly.
Some BIG bass in local ponds that are very fun to get on the Fly.
Black Crappy are a real hoot on the Fly as well!
Certain places have some large Sun Fish also.
Fun with the Fly Rod is all around ya!! http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif

Vinlandfrost,
I'm kind of in the area. I'm guessing 100 miles away. You may be interested in a venture to the Catskills where a lot of us are meeting for a 'Fish-In' at the end of May. Take a look on the left. Click on Fish-Ins, then click on Roscoe, NY 2005. Lots of information about it.

I just may do that, thats enough planning time and sounds like fun....at least for one day. Thanks!
Vinlandfrost--
check out the adirondacks. from utica, you should be close enough to hit remson, booneville, cayuta, and several other small towns in the foothills of the adirondacks within a half hour. also check out Kayuga lake for some fantastic largemouth bass. and drive about an hour further north, youll find yourself in the heart of the adirondacks with a multitude of fantastic fly fishing opportunities for trout, walleye, northern pike, small and largemouth bass, pickerel...you name it. and dont forget the finger lakes and surrounding creeks, streams and rivers.
and never underestimate the mohawk river. its rarely mentioned, and is certainly not what i would consider spectacular as far as trout fishing goes, but it is stocked regularly (at least when i was there), and holds enough water to maintain a decent population of trout ranging from 7"(fresh stockers) up.
ive long since moved away from the area, and havent been back in about 15 years or more. but as a kid the Utica-Rome area was where i called home. my brothers and i would spend the weekends pedaling our bikes around town catching stockers with worms, and bass with lures. our parents would often take us camping up in the adirondacks, where fishing was good and plentiful.
check around. i guarantee youll find good places and good people to enjoy fishing very nearby.
I'm very familiar with your area and you are indeed in a great place for fly fishing. I'm not aware of any regular posters on this board who are super close to Oneida, but there may be any number of lurkers who are and who can spend some time with you.
In addition to this wonderful board, check out some others that are more focused on your region and make a similar post. I've found fly fishers to be an incredibly generous and kind group of people and I'm sure you'll find some who will be happy to do a bit of mentoring for you.
I'd also suggest that you find a local fly shop, look for a local chapter of TU or FFF. All are great sources of local mentors.
Thanks for all the helpful Info!!

Just a little up to date. Thanks again for all who helped me in my search! I found 'Trout Unlimited' Has a chapter in my County as well as their homebase fishing waters is Chittenango creek where I fish. They even have a fly fishing apprentice program. Needless to say I joined and will soon try this fly-fishing sport. Gonna seem funny putting down my 4 ft ugly stik and using a 8 1/2' flyrod, but we will see!! Thanks again everyone!

Vineland Frost,
You are in the middle of where "its at" so ask around and visit the tackle shops. You'll find that about 20 t0 40 percent of the people you meet are fishers and a good proportion of them, I'd guess 10 to 20 percent of are fly fishers. you have Limestone and Butternut creeks west and close to you, Chittenango and Scriba close in. The headwaters of the Chenango for brookies. The whole area north of Oneida lake is infested with numerous streams. Fish Creek and the area around the Delta Reservoir can be good and of course the Lake Ontario and Finger Lakes tribs are there if big fish are what tickles your fancy. There are many many more streams too numerous to mention and you'll meet other fishers on nearly all of them. Rome has a hatchery you might visit...they should have a pile of give away information.
Ol' Bill
Ol'Bill, You seem to know alot about the area. Used to live here?? Im going to fo and try Fish Creek here as soon as the water lets down abit (We have had flooding bad here in the last 3 days). Fish Creek is only about 4 miles away. Thanks for the info
