Vise Extensions
I am looking into a vise extension for my Dyna-King Professional vise. Have any of you tried tying with an extension? It allows you to tie away from the table or desk a bit so you are not hunched over as much. Fran Betters ties with an old vise he and a friend designed and built and it swings out away from his tying desk so he can lean back in his chair as he ties - it is more comfortable for him he says and since he ties quite a bit for his shop, he needs that. What do you think? [url=http://www.dyna-king.com/acces...d=078:28831]http://www.dyna-king.com/acces...d=078[/url:28831]

I can see how some would find it more comfortable to tie that way.
By the way, your link is missing the center part. How are you copying it and from what browser?
Here's the complete link:

I must have not been paying attention when I copied the message and link. I posted it on OB Board as well. Thanks for completing it.

Hi Randy,
I've been using the Dyna-King L-Shape Vise Extension for the past 18+ months and like it alot. Before this I bought a L-shaped knock off and it was not bent the correct way. I hope this helps. Take-care.

It is a very good item. Makes adjusting to different tables ery easy and being away from the table gives you more room between the fly and the table.

I've been using a Dyna King extension for 3 or 4 years. I have found no more comfortable way to tie, especially for long tying sessions eliminating back pain and fatigue. The extension also offers more flexibility to make vertical adjustments than a conventional set up.

I've been useing an extention setup for a very long time...It's been pieced together from old vise shafts as I've been through a few different stages of vise quality over the years....The only good use of a crown vise is in the making of an extention....The things we learn...lol

"I've often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before" A.K.Best

Hans W on the 'other board' mentioned that the perspective one has when using the extension takes some getting used to. I visited Fran Betters at his shop a while back and when he tied with an extended vise, he sat sideways to the table, which gave him the same perspective while tying. Do any of you find that to be an issue?

Also, do you see a beneift of the adjustable extension versus the fixed one? The adjustable is up to a 9" extension and the fixed one is a 4" extension? The cost is only $5.00 more. I was worried a little that the longer extension might be wobbly.

You can make your own extentions if you can find a place that sells machinist tools. Buy a 3/8 swivel or two,for extentions on a mag base for dial indicators and a piece of 3/8 drill rod or cold roll 3/8 rod. Most shafts on vise's are 3/8. The cost's are not very much, and you may find these things in a flea market where some people sell tools even cheaper than a tool supply.
Cut them any length and you can also bend them any shape by heating. Also they have a 3/8 to 1/8 swivel you may use to make your own parachute hanger or bobbin cradle. I use a 1/8 stainless welding rod for this, any 1/8 rod will do though.

Two production tiers that I know use the L shaped extention below a c clamp. They like their tying to be level with their elbows not above the table.

I used a vise extension, with my old set up. Now that I have a real fly tying desk it doesn't seem as comfortable. I might try it from the bottom as thosae commerical tyers are doing.

I'm using the fixed extension. I had the same concern as you about the adjustable but have seen Davy Wotten tie using the adjustable and he had no problems.
