Aha, the wonders of google (should have gone there first!). Triple surgeon's knot for the loop.
You could put a Surgeon's loop in the backing; make it pretty big so you can pass the fly line (still on the spool) through. You could also use an Albright Knot (coated with Knotsense), my favorite. Hope the loop in the line's not too big; not likely, but you could hook a burner and lose a guide or tiptop.
Regards,
Scott
I'd actually be worried about that knot catching in the guides on the way out. I'd cut it off and go with a needle knot, same as I'd use on a line without a rear loop.
I have used a figure-8 loop without any problems. Actually I've always thought that an Albright, tied on a line without a loop, would be more likely to hang up.
Never had a fly line with a loop for the backing ... have had fly lines with the loop for the leader connection and in that case I went with a loop to loop connection, using a plain over hand loop knot for the leader - larger leader material like 25# mono and above, use a perfection loop. But as for a loop for the backing, I suppose that would work as well, but that would be a big hassle for making a loop to loop - would you not have to pull the entire length of either the fly line or the backing through the loop ...?
As for attaching the fly line to the backing, in that the line dia. is considerable between the fly line and that of the backing (assuming there's no loop involved), I use a sheet bend knot. Small, strong knot, and the odds of that knot ever getting to the exposed are enormous (at least for the fish I catch!) -

I have been using huge loops for years and passing the line through the loop twice. Never had an issue with "burners" and cannot imagine worrying about such a thing. When a big fish is running hard the loop is exactly like a straight piece of line.
I weld loops in any lines I use for the attachment...
I have never given any thought to the backing knot. Even when fishing in Alaska I have never had a fish get me into the backing.
Fishing salt water might be different. A 20 lb Silver is the biggest fish I have had on line in Alaska with a 7 weight wt. rod. A lighter weight rod in Alaska might make me worry about the knot.
Yeah, that would work with a LARGE second loop, but got me to thinking again (dangerous!) - since there's already the loop on the fly line, simply tie the backing on with sheet bend knot.

I just use a non-slip mono loop (lefty's knot). Make the loop big enough to pass over the spool, superglue the knot. Passes through the guides just fine.
I cut off both loops.
Add loops & use a bimini......
For Dacron I use a Bimini twist to make a long loop. I then fold the loop over and tie a two times through surgeons knot (often referred to as a double surgeons). That leaves me with a single line to the Bimini, two strands to the surgeons, then two loops. You want the final double loop big enough to pass a reel through. The two loops are looped to the end of the flyline. If you have trouble with the Bimini you can use a 6 turn surgeons knot to make the first loop with all else the same after that. This connection will be very strong and allow easy line changes. I actually use this connection on every rig I use from 1wt to 14wt.
If you don't want the loop to loop connection just connect the Dacron to the loop with an Albright knot.
I do not remove the factory loops from fly lines made in the last half dozen years or so. I have had no problem with these going through the guides whether I'm fishing for trout or tuna.
Spliced loop in backing. As a holdout using 30# micron, this is one option.
Bimini Twist

I use a Castwell knot, on both ends. never had a problem
Bimini Twist in the backing.
Sure a lot of different thoughts on how we do things. Whatever works for a person is best for him I guess. Me? I'd cut the loop off and since backing is some sort of braid that draws up nicely I put the backing to fly line with a simpler Uni-Knot. Simply make a big loop with the backing, run the tag end through the loop about 8 times, snug up and move close to end of fly line and cinch down hard. Makes a nice tight barrel on the line that looks similar to a nail knot tho it is slight different in construction.
Since I generally use furled leaders now I do use the front loop for the furled leader. If I do use an all mono leader I then cut loop off and go with a heavy base mono and a nail knot to run leader off. Actually, I use a snell knot to put the mono to fly line. It is EXACTLY the same thing as a nail knot but much faster to tie.
