I have made few, not many. The parts for pierced ears or earring clips are available at craft stores like Michaels. Straight-eye hooks will hang best of course. You will have the opportunity to make the colour and size that fits your offspring re. hair colour/design and neck length. I always tied Carrie Stevens style streamers because non-fishers recognize them as flies/lures and they can be colourful or dramatic.
The main challenge is deciding if you are going to cut off the bend of the hook, or if you are going to leave the bend and point, gluing a small bead onto the point (maybe cut 1/2 the point off so it looks like a hook with a bead on the point). Good luck regardless.
Let's not get that fad again.
You can fashion earrings for your daughter and granddaughter without starting another run on feathers. The findings (earring parts) are easily found at Michaels Crafts. They're fairly self explanatory. Let them pick from the feathers you don't usually use (;-)), bundle them with your tying thread, clamp the finding part around the quill end, and wear 'em! You don't have to go near as far as tying flies to suspend from the loops although that would be really fun .. if they are in to flyfishing. Try not to have them use the really long feathers, as they get caught in stuff (hair, collars, jewelry).
And, yes. I have made many pairs of earrings WITH my granddaughter. It's a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. Even if it will look like a bird blew up on the floor of your tying room when you finish! Take pictures. It's a memory you'll want to revisit.
I have nothing to contribute, but I thought that fad went out with the '80's.
thank you Betty here is what i done so far http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e8...78060950_o.jpg
Beautiful!
Very nice!! I've thought about making feather ear rings for a while now, but never could come up with a design I liked. Gives me some food for thought.
A pair I made for my wife several years back.

The attached photos all look great. The only comment I would add is that when I used to tie them for all my feminine loved ones the only complaint was that the clasp or hook for the ear needed to be a closing clasp. The earrings were so light that there was no weight to keep them down on the bend of the ear hook. Like Betty stated they were always lifting out of their ears and losing one of them. They should be easy to find in the craft stores right by the open ear hooks you are using.
The benefit was yet another reason to justify buying the fancy and expensive full pheasant skins. ;)
Not feather earrings, but something called a Living Locket.
My wife showed me one of hers a couple days ago, and I said that she could put one of my flies inside it. This isn't a particularly good picture, but you get the idea.
You can buy these lockets in different sizes and shapes and they are relatively inexpensive. I just did an Ebay search and found 1000's of them available for sale. A nice thing about this is that you can easily change the fly whenever you want, and you don't have to cut the hook off to make a fly unfishable in case you later want to fish with it.

I like that idea and you can change them up,one for every day of the week.
