I'm looking for tippet rings, please let me know if you have any ideas.
Bass Pro Shop has them in the 'regular' fishing department with the snaps and swivels and such.
J Stockard (see Betty's link) offered a "free" sample recently when you purchased other items. I don't think that is still available. However, the ones I received work very well.
feather-craft also has them.
GOOGLE knows where to get them

I get mine from Stockard
Stockard also.
Good Deal, Good People AND a sponsor.

I have tippet rings. I buy them in bulk
$4.00 for 15. I have them in three diameters - Approx 1. 2. and 3 mm for outside diameters. Inside diameters are a bit smaller. 2 mm is the best all around size since it allows you enough room to use a loop in the tippet to connect to the ring rather than actually tie the tippet to the ring. I'll even send you a mixed packet of 1,2, & 3 mm rings - 5 of each for $4.00. PM me if you are interested.
I also purchase my tippet rings from J. Stockard. I purchased from another vendor....and he sent the wrong sizes....and we got in a battle over it. I always get the right stuff from J. Stockard. So....that is where I buy. Won't go elsewhere....because I can trust and depend on who I buy from now. The future may change. But for now it is nice to order and get what you want. J. Stockard rocks. I am very satisfied purchasing from J Stockard. I purchase the black ones.
I have some tippet rings from feather-craft, ordered awhile ago along with other flytying and flyfishing stuff and I am on my last tippet ring so I thought I'd give Stockard a try @ $7.95 for a small packet of 20 rings. We all know how thin and small this packet is. Could it be put in an envelope and have a stamp affixed to it, the stamp aka shipping charge rather than pay their usual shipping charge? I decided to call and voila, I got one of the owners. Nope, he said the charge would be $5 because there is more to filling an order than just putting a plastic zip envelope into an envelope to mail, credit card charges, (wha'?), etc.
Didn't understand his trying to justify a $5 shipping charge for a tiny plastic zip envelope so decided to pass. If I had been ordering lots of fly tying materials from my new source, I definitely would understand including the rings with the rest of my order and paying the usual shipping charge, but, as a new customer, I would think, expecting future orders from me, he would have just slipped that little bitty envelope with rings into a standard mailing envelope with a stamp and sent it to me.
There are two saltwater fly tying materials online companies I deal with, very well known, who charge the customer only what it costs them to ship the item(s). Very, very fair of them. I do a lot of business with these two companies.
I would have liked to try Stoddard's tippet rings but, unfortunately, I can't justify spending $5 to ship a tiny envelope to me containing 20 tiny rings costing $7.95:)
So, thanks, Betty and others, who vouched for Stoddard but they're a bit too rigid in their shipping policy for me.
Well, heck, Ron ... you shoulda hollered! I'm always ordering stuff up ... I would have ordered the rings up and sent them to you when they got here ...
Heck ... I've probably got a full pack downstairs ... you need 'em?
I went to wal mart with a small length of 5x tippet to use as a guide. Then I scouted around in the jewelery section till I found some stainless steel necklaces and found the right size. I just clip off the individual links for perfect tippet rings. I have bought off of Stockard but for about 3 or 4 bux I got hundreds of very good rings. Plus I got the correct size.
Like Gemrod I got in a battle with some supplier who sent the wrong sizes. Plus one outfit charged me $15.00 shipping for 5 tippet rings of the wrong size that he sent me in a regular letter with 23 cents postage on it.
I have found necklaces that work well in quite a few stores, you have to make sure they are stainless. Medi-alert bracelets and necklaces are usually stainless and fairly cheap. I got over 200 useable tippet rings off some fancy earings with lots of dangling chain on them at a yard sale for 50c
Thx for your suggestions. I will go to my craft store which has an amazing asst. of jewelry rings and see if they have seamless stainless steel rings but I would have preferred to purchase from a flytying materials company who had rings specifically for my purpose. It's really a shame. Fly tying stores/internet sites complain about loss of business and sometimes having to close down so I just can't understand why a customer like me should have to absorb a $5 shipping charge for a tiny plastic envelope and, therefore, I will shop elsewhere.
These companies need to be reasonable like the two sources I mentioned above. It doesn't cost them more than a stamp to put something so light in an envelope but, when doing so, they will get so much more business down the line when the new customer needs supplies.
Betty, thanks for your offer to include the rings in your order but Stoddard stated their shipping policy to me and, so, I can get the rings elsewhere. Although your offer was heartfelt and so appreciated, it's just the principle of their policy and I don't care for it.
Ron
Ron, I agree with you entirely. I ordered multiple stuff and didn't realize the cost of shipping just for tippet rings. I wouldn't do it either. In fact the whole S&H thing been bothering me lately. Had something shipped to me in very small box they charged $20 S&H. I asked postmaster himself and he checked it out. It cost THEM $1.90 to send it to me. Not Stockard....but outrageous. I am wanting to write letters to congressmen and such to try to get people to quote their price with overhead included....and be only legal to charge actual shipping charges. Ticks me off big time.
I have looked in Jewelry depts before...I was not able to find suitable tippet ring material. Sounds like I missed it. Thanks for the tip.....pun intended......
A $5 shipping charge is reasonable. Larger outfits have someone to pull the order, then it gets packed, and shipping supplies are NOT cheap! I don't like paying that for a small item, either, but I understand well, the costs involved. I hold off until I can place a larger order. I won't do business with the folks that overcharge like those mentioned that charged $15+ for a low end shipping fee.
What I find unreasonable is $7.95 for 20 rings. There is 20 cents worth of rings there. I guess that is par for the course, though. Price those little tiny squares of foam in a fly shop sometime. I think I will try Grainger's or Fastenall. I would bet they have something that will work for a lot less money.
What is wrong with the tiny split rings used in lure making?
The split rings used in lure making are different in that they're not solid seamless rings and the tippet could slip out of the ring or the abrasion from the split in the ring could break the tippet after casting awhile. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
I agree with you that a $5 shipping charge is reasonable in most cases. But, when an item is practically weightless, flat and fits in an envelope, it's sensible and good customer service to waive the fee and send it to the customer using a stamp just as the two suppliers mentioned above do when they get an order like this.
The abrasion issues were not thought of before. Good point. I was thinking of how much less expensive they were.
Stockard's order fulfillment software may be set up with the $5 shipping charge as a minimum with no way for the folks doing the shipping to get around it. The last employer was an up and coming distributor of Wireless equipment. USPS was not even an option for shipping for us. When I started handling international sales and needed the USPS or a freight forwarding service to be able to provide a reasonable cost shipping alternative, I had to mark orders as will call, add a note to pack for shipping and mark the weight on the box. Previous to actually placing the order, I calculated the shipping, added a bit of fudge factor in case I was off, and got the total to the customer so they could send a wire transfer for the correct amount. Once I got the wire transfer, I had to prepare the shipping documents and deliver the packages to the post office or freight forwarder myself, paying with a company credit card. The shippers simply were not set up to handle it and neither was the software.
What sounds like it should be very simple to do, is often made very difficult due to limitations in software or policy that there is little way around. That does not mean it is right. It just means that's the way things are.
I have yet to find 2mm seamless metal rings in any Jewelry store, so J. Stockard is my choice, but for $30.+ I buy the 100's. Surprisingly enough, it doesn't take that long to go through them.
They do have a special right now on thread with NO SHIPPING charge.
I,m with Joni...can't find them either...at least at a reasonable price.....it's the seamless that is the issue....were yours, GBF?
Seems to me someone some time ago reported finding silver ones in the jewelry section but I couldn't find those seamless either.
J. Stockard's thread price on Flymaster+ is 35 cents more than my online supplier per spool. Also, although I've checked their site, I don't see any mention of free shipping on thread; however, I may have missed it somewhere. Nevertheless, I don't need thread. I need a tiny package of 20 seamless ss rings which would cost them much less to ship to me with free shipping or even a 44 cent stamp than 5 spools of thread. Don't understand their reasoning on this but I've already made up my mind about this supplier, sad to say for them.
Silver Creek.....are they black?
and.....what would be the shipping and handling charge?
I'm one of the owners of J. Stockard Fly Fishing, and a member just let us know about the gist of this thread. We understand the difficulty about shipping charges and want to help. Here is a coupon code that FAOL members can use to take $5 (our normal Economy Shipping charge) off an order of tippet rings and/or anything else. The code is FAOL5off and this single use coupon is good through September.
Please visit us online at www.jsflyfishing.com or call 877-FLY-TYING (877-359-8946). To those who were put off by the shipping charge, we hope you'll give us another chance!
wahoooo! Looks my phone call to them did a tad of good. Perhaps several people will take advantage and get some rings at discount.
I know it is time for me to stock up......
Thank you James V.

Several folks have contacted me about the rings. I was trying to help the original poster who wanted to try some rings cheaply. After re reading my post it sounds like I am in business to sell rings but I am not.
I did send some rings out to several folks who PM'd me and I even offered to send out free sample rings if they would send me a self addressed stamped envelope. But the offer was really only to the original poster.
Sorry for the confusion.
Right ON! That that is what I call good customer service! I wish it had happened a few weeks ago when I ordered my 100. I am the one that got charged for the 100, but received 20...LOL
All good, you corrected in a couple of days and my customers understood.
The Thread was UNI for free shipping. I think it was a limited sale thing though. It is 20% off on Uni this month
Not a problem for "me" Silver Creek. I just wanted to try all the sizes. I have not seen anything but 2's and 3's and just wanted some samples.
It's all good sir. Your post was with good intentions. It did indeed sorta look like you were in business. But not.....one can really tell you were just able to get them from an economical source.....I knew you were not a re-seller. Thanks for the info.
I was one of those who phoned you about the shipping charge and am very appreciative of your special code offered to us FAOL members. I will definitely put in my first order with your company which will include the tippet rings and I thank you for your good customer service!
Ron
Just placed my first order with J. Stockard, mainly because of their excellent customer rapport offering a $5 discount code to us FAOL'ers and I look forward to purchasing from their site in the future.
Thank you, FAOL poster, for getting in touch with them to advise them what was being discussed re their company/shipping costs. It was a good thing because I feel they'll be getting some new customers and that's what online shopping is all about.
