fly tying CD
Hey folks I have a question for the guru's of this board. I have a spare computer on my fly tying/ reloading bench that I use for my load development and since it's there does anyone know of a good CD of recipe for flys? I figure the fly on the ol' puter screen would be easier to see than in a book. If you folks have any places or recommendations I'd really like to hear them. Thanks,
Kirk

Take a look to the left. See the menu where it says "Fly Tying"? Click on that, and then go the the "Archive". Dozens of illustrated patterns with step-by-step instructions in there. A great website is [url=http://www.troutflies.com:76f58]www.troutflies.com[/url:76f58] if you need more detailed instruction.

Whatever happened to the FOTW cd's that went around a year or 2 ago? I was without a computer for a while, so maybe I just missed something. I tried using the search function, but came up empty.

The Dick Stewart and Farrow Allen series of books, Flies for Trout, Flies for Bass and Panfish, Flies for Saltwater, etc. are all available on CD. They were done back when something like windows 95 was the standard operating system, so they are not as slick as todays cd's/dvd's in terms of getting around in it, but the pictures are large and reproduced very well, and of course the text and recipes are great. Cheers, Alec

The reason I was looking for a CD is that I don't have the internet on the said computer, I have been all over this site and really like it. I'll be doing some searching when I get home for the references you guys offered. Later,

I gotta give it up to Plain Old Jim for the CD! I haven't loaded it on my puter just yet but I have looked it over and have to say wow.
If anyone has a copy of the FOTW CD I'd be glad to purchase a copy or two. Later and thanks for the help you all have offered this ol' Okie.

Can that computer of yours play DVD's as well? If so, there are plenty of good tying DVD's available. If it's an older machine, the optical drive may well be CD-only. If so, you can probably replace it fairly cheaply with a combo CD/DVD drive...
-
Ya it's an older machine but here lately I have taken over the puter table in the kitchen (I can watch everyone fish and hunt on the tube while it's cold) I've been entertaining the notion to replace this unit with a newer one but then I couldn't get that new flyrod I've been eyeing so we'll just have to see who wins, the wife or the flyrod :-) Later,

Hang tight Ksmirk. I will mail you the FOTW cd tomorrow. I just got in from 3 days away from home. Someone just blessed me with it, so I already have your address. You get it probably this week.
Thwack,
I bought a dvd fly tying cd and it will play on our DVD "player" in the living room. It will NOT play on my dvd drive on my computer, which is next to my fly tying desk in another room! I shoulda ordered the vhs tape instead. I guess I have to buy another dvd player just to use it where I want it.

POJ, the dvd should play through windows media player, if not get a hold of a copy of "power dvd" or similar, that should solve your problem.

Well dang you Kirk. You got my last blank cd. <grin> Went out in today's mail. I bought 2 envelopes....one with padding and just so happened to be one bigger size with cardboard so stuffed one inside the other for protection. Post Office said you should have it Thur. No big deal. I have gotten lot's of stuff free from the wonderful people on this website. It's quid pro quo. It's what FAOL friends are for. What a great family.

PlainOldJim - sorry your computer won't play your DVD. If you post more details on the config, somebody here will have the answer (and I see somebody's already posted one potential workaround).
I have a couple fly tying DVD's that don't like to work in my Sony DVD player, but work fine in all my computers, and in my other (non-Sony) DVD player.
I think the Sony is just showing it's age and needs to be replaced...

Jim THANKS AGAIN! dang this is begining to be one of my favorite sites to visit, over the years I've been on many site and while the majority of them are pretty much just flame sites. Ksmirk, no problem dude. This is getting spendy though. You are by far not the only one who requested one and I have complied so far with all requests. But....it is just the way the good of this website balances out. It all goes around.....it's all good.
Hey Oldfrat....this is old F.A.R.T...."Fix And Repair Technician" <grin>

Thanks again, POJim!
If there is a big demand for this, maybe FAOL could sell them. Heck, even include the links to FAOL sponsors who sell tying supplies.

Anyone who does not have a FOTW CD, email your mailing address to me at...
[email:61148]parnelli@comcast.net[/email:61148]
I will send you a FOTW CD, free shipping included (Anywhere in the world). It is in Adobe (PDF).
All 8 years of the FOTW, plus all the flies from "Old Fly and Stuff"
Working on this year Volume, and trying to get some other stuff to add on to the CD (plenty of room, using Adobe).

I just save all the patterns from FAOL to my hard drive and burn them on a CDRW in Microsoft Word format. I add each weeks Fly Of The Week to it. I didn't know they had a CD out. I would like one as well.
I have started on the Old Flies and Stuff.
Of course, I don't make copies or let others use it. I direct them to the website.
These are stricly for my own use.

POJ, I feel I gotta send you something! it ain't much just a couple ol' fish heads from the last outing and some moss but the water was clean so the moss should not stink, the fish heads on the other hand well it has been in the high 70's to low 80's here in Okieville so as soon as I can get the wife to pick up the heads and put them in the plastic bag for me I'll get them in the mail. Nah just pulling your leg I lost the moss. Thanks again for your help! Later,
Kirk

Kirk,
Thanks for the windfall. I will put all the teeth from the fish heads under my pillow and get a ton of money from the tooth fairy. <grin>
