how to price this rod?

A student of mine came to me with a rod that was given to him but he would now like to part with. It is an Orvis rod but has not other designation on it.

The word graphite is printed on there along with the fact that it is a 7.5 foot two piece 1 wt.

I sort of would like to buy the rod although I have no clue what I would do with it nor what the going rate for the rod is. I neither want to hose the young man nor over pay so if someone could tell me a bit about the line and what I ought to pay I would be in your debt.

I am guessing that the rod is a lower end model with so little on it

It sounds like an early Orvis graphite probably from the mid 1980's. If it has a rough finish that's what it is. Early on Orvis did not sand their blanks after rolling them. I've got a 9 1/2' 8 wt in that same grapite. I've used it for years for salmon and steelies. Fairly soft and slo by todays standards. but for a 1 wt it should be nice.

Look at the butt of the grip. Is ther eanything engraved on the butt cap?

unsanded grey with brown wraps - a Superfine, Far and Fine worth $200 and more

that rod will go for $ 200-225 on ebay . that series is arguably one of the most collectable that orvis made. its a damn fine rod. it could easily be sold on this board in short order. include some pics. best ,heinrich

I agree that it's an older superfine model.

old superfine. people love these rods. if its in decent shape, you can expect $175-225, as others have stated.

How can you tell if that rod is a superfine?

can't be certain without photos but best guesses are based on:
Orvis
7.5
1 wt
plain blank, minimal inscription

These four items really narrow it. There are few 1 wt rods that were made that fit this. Be neat to see some photos tho.

OH man that is it dead on. I was hoping that it was a cheapy that I could buy just to chase the gills with and have some fun but not at 150-200

Old Orvis catalogs would be the best way to identify the rod. Guess you'd be looking at a late 1980's - early 1990's rod that came out after the 1 ounce rods.

Rembered the Orvis News used to have the catch club with pictures of what was caught on specific rods & think there was a 1 weight pin for the accomplishment. Will have to get out the old papers, just as getting out some old Orvis catalogs for this info. A spring 1993 issue had a Superfine: The One Weight advertised as the world's first one weight graphite fly rod, the most delicate fly rod ever made. 7 1/2' 2/1 when 6X tippets are the rule. 1 3/8oz with cork & ring reel seat & superfine grip. Premium outfit with a CFO I, DT1F line, 100 yards 12 lb backing & front loop was $500. Rod only $295 & Blank only $125.

holy crud is that cool. I hope the young man wants to keep this or sells it to buy a 4 wt starter kit and goes into fly fishing,

with no streams close by not many people ever pick up a fly rod around here. It would be cool to have another around to go chase gills with

No. The One Ounce was advertised on the same page as a #2 weight rod. 6 1/2' - 2/1 . The world's lightest fly rod for size 12 to 24 dry flies & nymphs to be cast 15 to 50 feet. At one time Orvis advertised it as weighing the same as 4 quarters. Outfit & rod were the same prices as the #1 weight, but the blank was $5 more than the #1 weight.

Honestly, the handle shows no signs that it ever had a reef attached to it much less ever saw water
It is in perfect shape but the tube looks worn, My guess is that it was in a closet or somewhere that allowed things to wear on the tube and roll it around

Attachment 4375The rod tube is correct, if not too well worn. Have the same rod tube & rod bag in an 8' - 4/1 All Rounder #7 weight with superfine action; from a few years earlier than the #1 weight & One Ounce debut.

My guess is that the rod never saw action but the tube rolled some guy's closet for the past couple decades. Not a mark where it counts!

What reel would you (all) suggest to pair up with this?? if he were to keep it

Added a picture for y'all. Hope you can read the fine print on the left between the rod tube & the Orvis catalog. A CFO 1 was the matching reel, but a CFO II , a Hardy Flyweight or any other diminuative reel should balance adequately.
