Drivers license
Michael goes for his drivers test next Wednesday 9am sharp!
I always told him he would take the test in our old truck, aka:Harvey
My way of thinking is that with standard manual everything,
especially equipped with no turn signals and should he manages to parallel park
old harv, he will of earned his new privilege..,
Susan always told me my way of thinking was cruel , well today with Michael present
she told me to get Harvey ready, you should of seen Michaels face :roll:
As proud parents wish us luck,,,we are in for the next phase of our child's life
and boy oh boy are we ready to enjoy every minute of it!

We raised three sons in a way that led to young men I am really proud of. All three sons survived and have done well. I can't say the same about their vehicles.
I wish you the best. May your son come through it unharmed, your insurance still affordable, and the vehicles not a terribly punishing loss as you write them off.
I'm sorry to sound so negative. But, do yourself a favor and buy him something big, slow and inexpensive to drive for the first year or so. That's what my parents did for me and what I wish I had done for my sons.

Probably one of the reasons Barb and I have made it 43 years is we survived me teaching her to drive. Then our son and twelves years later his little sister. They have all bent a little sheet metal, as have I, but not serious injuries. Our son turned 40 last Monday, I will never forget answering what was probably the hardest phone call he has ever made. Michael was finishing up his senior year livng with friends and we had moved about 100 miles away. A rainy Sunday night he pulled out in front of a waitress at our favorite pizza place, dinged up his little Sentra pretty good. No one was injuried, I told him not to worry about the car we would get it fixed. As a young dad I had probably fussed and yelled too much about little things, but it seems I got most of the big deals right. He mentioned it in a fathers day card a few years ago.
I wish you and your Michael safe journeys, watch out for the other guys, there are a lot of nuts out there. BTW, I learned to drive in a '53 long wheelbase International pickup, manual everything, no radio.

Good luck to all involved. Harvey will hold a special place in his memory for the rest of his life.
Both my boys took their tests in "Martha" - an old Taurus I rescued from the salvage yard and drove for 6 years before I gave it away.
Something about cars that have names...

This is coming from a Driver Ed teacher in a High School...
His training period is most definately NOT over. He is just legal to go out on his own. A good head on his shoulders is his best, safest, tool in the box right now.
Please tell him from all of us to think safe, be safe, all the time.

Steve you'll survive when he gets it all parents do!!! As long as he's safe and sound, make him take drivers education IT DOES help on Insurance.

Celebration!
Susan has him enrolled in a defensive driving course in Alameda coming
up in a couple weeks. Sounds like a good all day class.
Sure doesn't seem that long ago he and I would be out tooling around in Harvey.
He's always loved to shift the gears and steer...

Steve your thread brought a smile to my face and brought up a couple of laughs. What an awesome time in your lives. I reminisced with myself and recall a few of my firsts and friends first car rides alone and the names of those cars.
