I have to wait between rods for my thumbnails to grow out enough to be useful thread packers again. Do you pack your threads with a tool? Has anyone tried a guitar pick on your thumb instead of your thumb nail?

guitar pick would work fine. I trim my nails so I can't use them. my favorite tool was a curved plastic 6" ruler but I lost it. used a small 45* triangle, it was ok. lately I've been using the back side of my scalpel blade on the exacto knife and think it may work best of all. try whatever you've got until you find something yer happy with.
Haven't tried that yet but it sound's like a perfect idea.
I always used a Gudebrod thread packing tool made from teflon....but I think they went out of business..??
I take a bamboo chop stick and cut the top off leaving about 4 to 5 inches to the tip. Cut a slot in the top, then cut up one of my wife's credit cards and epoxy a 1/2" square in the slot. Works great for packing thread and the tip I use to burnish the thread. Plus it cuts my credit card expenditures way down.

I like the Gudebrod packing tool, but it "sheds" for some reason - leaves little white specks behind. I have a little bead picker thing that fits on the end of my thumg that is kind of shaped like a guitar pick is why I thought of the pick - I love things that stay attached(like thumbs). Lots of other good ideas, too.
I use a guitar thumb pick and it works great.
Great idea! I'll have to try that - since I have two rebuilds and at least one new one in the works soon.
Kelly.
The back edge of a clean table knife works great! And everyone has one.

I have the thumb pick but I will stick with the burnishing tool. I feel I have more control. But got to remember.....I am a newbie at this.
I use a dental tool. packs the thread really tight and does not fray it. It is the one they use to clean your teeth with.
I've a burnishing tool but it is way too bulky and awkward in hand.
I finally found a pic of the Gudebrod tool I use...

You can use it to pack thread and also to burnish
Sully, that's the one I have that "sheds" - can't figure why there are little white specks left behind. I like it otherwise.
Ernie Ball thumbpicks work best...
Wait, sorry...wrong forum....:p
A plastic guitar pick would work fine, but I would be very careful not to scratch the finish on the rod if you use any metal object to pack the threads. I use the plastic rod building tool like this http://shofftackle.com/tools.html It works for both packing and burnishing the threads.

Jim, that is the same I use. But I do have PLASTIC or NYLON thumb picks...I am a bass player.
