Wondering if any of you know where the best prices on Sage Z-Axis rods can be found? I've heard that there are deals out there, but I can't find them!
Feel free to PM if you'd rather.
Thanks,
TZB

whenever i do a GOOGLE or BING search, i will add the words "lowest price" after the item i'm looking for and most times there is a reward.
Sage is very strict regarding pricing on their products. All licensed distributors are on contracts AND they will immediately terminate the agreement if they catch anyone undercutting those prices.
IF you happen to find someone willing to risk their ability to purchase products in the future, keep it private.
Good luck in your quest.

I'd like some Fillet Mignon...
At a Big Mac price...
Anybody know where I can find some?
Thanks for the replies guys, I'll keep looking around. And to Sonny...well, there are 3 Sage rods in the tying room that I paid full price for, including a TCR...so I'm no stranger to paying too much for a fly rod!
If you find a Z-Axis you will and I mean you will love it. I have a 8' 6" 4wt. 4pc. It does everything from slow work to fast work. Best $2 bucks I ever spent...
They are the best rods i have found period. I have sold all my older rods and replaced them with the z-axis models. 9' 3wt 10' 4wt 9' 5wt 10' 5wt
11' 7wt i cant stop myself i need HELP!!!!!:D
Never fished a Sage rod, myself. I'm not into names, nor acronyms for models that anybody with a plastic card can also own.
I fish with Bamboo rods. Each one unique, no body has one like any of them.
I'm not a "bargain hunter" either. But I am a sly shopper.
When I find something I want, I buy it and enjoy it.
But I never look for steak at a fast-food price.
Perhaps the brand conscience are missing the real reason for fly fishing, and are merely collectors of the same gear the next fat wallet can duplicate.
Sonny, so you love a great bamboo rod that is as unique as the hand that holds it. Would you wish your brain surgeon use a hand crafted blade held in his human hand or the laser knife proven to have unsurpassed precision...after all it is only a brain tumor that is being removed.
I've got a couple of pretty fun bamboo rods and some fiberglass gems. I've also got some Z Axis rods (4, 5, 5, 7, 7 spey) that are truly delightful in my hands, deliver the line where and how I want. I've also got some other rods, some more affordable, some with other fancy names like ZXL, GLX, TiCr-X and the list goes on.
The guy asked for any knowledge about deals and you chide him about wanting steak for fast food prices. Maybe you should be more creative and tell him that sometimes he just has to save up for what he wants and sometimes you just have to try to find a good used Z Axis or one that was hand crafted by a passionate fly rod builder out of a blank...where a guy looking for the finest dining might just get that four course meal and save a few bucks...not fast food, but damn good food at a deal.
how do you know tzb doesn't feel the same way about sage rods that you do about bamboo? not sure if there is any difference between a bargain hunter and a sly shopper, if there is please enlighten me. fail to understand a veiled personal attack on someone who is trying to stretch his disposable dollars as far as he can. in this economy who can blame him? and due to the economy you absolutely can get steak at fast food prices. just check the want ads on this forum for several examples. good luck in your search tzb.
Whew...thanks guys, I was starting to feel like a twit for asking what I thought was a reasonable question. It would be foolhardy to suggest the "steak at a fast food price" nonsense considering that I'm not asking the best price on lower-end rod. I'm already resigned to the fact that there will be hundreds (and hundreds) of dollars sunk into this rod, and yes...hard-earned dollars squeezed out of what are some tough times. It is also patronizing for Sonny to suggest that I buy based on name-brands alone....he has never met, or fished with me. If he knew me, he would know that I try rods before I buy them, and want what feels right the first time. That has meant lower-end Lamiglas rods for their sweet action with dry flies, and it has also meant Sage TCR for beating western winds and hopper/dropper set-ups. It is (hopefully) a Z-Axis this time, new or used....this year or next.
Mumbles/dpenrod, thanks for chiming-in. Sonny-if it were a matter of slinging plastic around, I would have done that long ago and this thread wouldn't be here. I buy things when I have the money for them, and no sooner.
Let's leave it at that.
OK...back on track..
tzb,
A couple of years ago I bought a Z-Axis and for the life of me I can't remember if it was from an FAOL member or ebay....I think it was an ebay custom rod maker....he was great to deal with had lots of good feed back...and I saved 100's of dollars...and a nice job on the rod....
try a Z Axis search on ebay....
Prices on Ebay are usually less than MSRP. You might also try calling some bigger fly shops and asking if they'll offer a better price, at worst they'll just tell you no. I bought a new 9' 5wt Winston BIIX at 25% off retail from a Montana shop summer before last. Feathercraft has regular promotions if you sign up for their email newsletters offering discounts on anything you buy. Nice people to deal with too. Another thing, check out other websites like this one that have classified ads.
Good luck
You might also go to your local flyshop and find out who the local Sage rep is. Sometimes, if your timming is right, he/she may have a few DEMO rods to unload: Usually nothing more than soiled cork from test casts and they should come with a warranty like a new rod off the shelf. If money is an issue, and you are dead sure you want the Z, keep hunting on e-bay and other FF forums as the rod you want is sure to pop up eventually. In your search, if you run across a Sage RPL 590 2pc for under 2 bills let me know. I'll take an old brown sage over a new one anyday.

Note to self:
Never enter into a cultist conversation where they all own the same rods, and so many of them, and are constantly buying and selling them.
Must be:
A. They can't find any they are truly happy with.
Or
B. Gear and rods are simply a commodity to them.
Sigh... Back to the vise!
So glad Dad taught me it's the fisherman and not the rod.
The BEST PRICE *CANNOT* BE FOUND ON A WHIM!! Right now it is a BUYERS MARKET THO, so you can find z-axis, xp's at more than half off on the *USED* market. Heck, I know someone who got a winston 2bx, over $700 new for just $200!! And someone who got a zpey spey rod which goes for about $1000 for just $150. Where? well FAOL classifieds are a good source, as are the classifieds on kiene.com, washingtonflyfishing.com, speypages.com. But bottom line, if you want a specific rod TODAY, then it has changed from a supply situation to a DEMAND situation and fly shops sell at msrp unless on closeout (the xi 2 is about to be on closeout, so if you buy a xi2 at anything more than %60 of retail you are a, well you can figure it out).
You realize that cabelas is selling BRAND NEW sage xp's for the whoppingly low price of just $390, right?
B
Here's one on sale (guessing it's a demo).

Sonny, I'm not normally so critical but your way off here.
I bust my @$$ to provide for my family and put away a bit here and there for a new or new to me fly rod every now and again. I have never casted a fly rod that I was not pleased to have in hand. Some are better than others, some suit a mood better one day and another is calling for some companionship the next. There are rods that are in the go to class for certain locations or types of fishing. The only rod I have that I'm not truly happy with is the two hander that I've not yet found quite the right line. That being said, I enjoy fishing it tremendously as I get closer to finding an improved casting stroke or the right line that makes music with the rod.
Your dad taught you right, it is the fisherman. Some people collect rods, you boasted your pride in your bamboo...so is it you like your dad says, or is it your bamboo?
ditto. i'm not a member of the sage cult. i do own one sage rod that i fish for trout when i get the chance which unfortunately is not that often. most of my fishing is done with a short cabela's 4 wt. and a temple fork fiberglass rod. still don't get at all, why you think tzb's desire for a sage z axis makes him some uber consumer. like i said, maybe he just likes sage rods like you like bamboo.
TZB,
Can you tell us which model(s) you are looking for? That way if we spot a deal on the rod(s) you are wanting we can ping you.
As a side note, you will love the z-axis.
Not part of the sage "cult" Sonny. You were and are way off base. An Apology here, instead of more mud-slinging would be nice.
Some times it's fun not to be pragmatic:wink:.
