Here's some ideas:

I've also seen an article on using golden pheasant tippets but unfortunately can't find it.

Some people use starling feathers as an inexpensive jungle cock substitute.
the new fly tyer mag has an article on making your own wing burners...it shows someone making JC substitutes out of guinea fowl feathers by burning the area around the spot.
I have been meaning to dip a small hackle in alcohol to degrease it and then drop a small dot of orange hot melt glue on it. Thinking the alcohol will allow the glue to stick to the feather, perhaps even wicking through... Have not tried it yet, but have seen several articles on making what does not look very good to me...
I've seen many substitutes used, but really, I don't think anything compares to the real thing. I tend to just omit it entirely on most patterns.
If you only need a few nails, the prepacked Jungle Cock eyes aren't that expensive. If you need more than that, a decent full neck like a grade B or C with splits can be had for the price of a good dry fly neck.
Repairing split eyes takes about the same amount of time as making some type of fake eye and the real thing repaired or not, looks 1000 times better.
J. Stockard carries imitation Junglecock eyes. They work great, and are much more durable than the real ones, at 1/100th the cost.

I use them all the time.
I've never really thought there was an adequate sub for jungle cock. I've seen subs, I've used subs, and they just don't do it for me, but each to his own. I really hated the fake ones made out of cardboard, or plastic or whatever that was. At some point it's necessary to make a decision to spend all of your money on quality materials. It's one thing I won't skimp on anymore. I just skimp on other things, like food, shelter, and clothing.

I don't think there is a good substitute for real jungle cock eyes. If you really need a couple, buy them in a small package. I bought two full jungle cock necks on eBay a couple of years ago at a very reasonable price (less than $40). I use real feathers on display flies and generally leave them off fishing flies. Just my 2% of a dollar. 8T :)
I agree !!! There is no good substitute. Ya just need to bite the bullet and get the real stuff. I do have a catalog somewhere in my pile of mags, books, etc that has Jungle Cock where you can get select packages of ten or so nails specified by hook size (if you don't want to have to expend for the whole deal) !!! Let me hunt that catalog up, and I will give out the info.
Go to Stone River Outfitters. You can not only buy Full or half capes, but also packs of 10 select nails (an inexpensive way of doing this) specified to hook size. They do show the selection in their catalog or you can go online. As I said before, there is no substitute for the real McCoy !!!!!
Try hook and hackle or feather craft. i know feather craft has both golden tippets, white tippets and even starling skins.
