Hello from Rogue River, Or

I have used this site for some time now and would like to participate in discussions, so just a bit of an introduction.

I live on the middle Rogue, and fish mostly with a spey, unless I'm fishing dries, and then a 3 weight. Living on the river, I get to fish most days, if only a little dry flyfishing (mayfly spinners or midges) before dark. Mostly I fish for steelhead.

I tie quite a bit, and owe my beginnings to Al Campbell, though I never actually met him. To me, this is the best informational fly fishing site on the web.

Thanks for the kind words. If you have not fished the Rogue lately, you will find that that a half pounder might be a ten and a half pounder. For some reason, the percentage of steelhead getting another salt or two has increased, and so the size of the fish. The salmon seems to have put on weight also. A springer (king spring Salmon) used to be a 10 - 20 lb fish. Above 30 is now common.

We still have the half pounders too.

I'm pretty new here too and I find myself enjoying the camaraderie more and more every day.

I was out your way at the end of June, but didn't manage to get in any Steelie fishing (kicks himself in the butt), but did end up in Bend fishing the Deschutes with some success. WHaddya say you show me the Rogue the next time I'm out there?!?!

Visted your side of the mountain today. I fished Agate Lake near White city for warm water fish. It was kinda slow, but I managed to gather enough crappie & gills for a couple of meals plus let a few Largemouth Bass go free.

If you like warmwater fly fishing Agate Lake as well as Lost Creek Res, Willow Lake and Emigrant Res can provide you some fun.

I would like to try crappie on a fly with you sometime. I have not tried it, and tend to fish the Rogue, or the Upper Sac or the Smith. Stuck in my ways I guess. My brother fishes the crappie tournaments, so I better know how to catch one before he shows up!

Rriver: I don't think I will be making another trip to the Rogue Valley in the near future because of some commitments and the upcoming waterfowl season. Come duck season I hide my fishing equipment until maybe January or February. Besides that, even though the fish are still hitting at Agate Lake it is an ugly place to fish as the water has been drawn down so much for irrigation that there is large mud flats. If you want to try it on your own you have about a month before it gets too cold. What I do is wear chest waders, wade out to about belt depth and work along the shore. I usually catch most of the crappie further out and the bass and bluegill almost parallel to where I am wading. I use streamer type patterns in size 8 or 10 and sink them. I usually use 2 flies, one about 5 feet from the fly line and the dropper a couple of feet below that. 6 or 8 lb leader works fine. Wooley Buggers are one of my favorites. In addition Rick Z has a list of his favorite crappie flies here on FAOL and I have tried most of them with good success.
