Anyone know of a source for horse mane hair ?
Thanks, Jim
A horse, perhaps? Or, is this a "trick question"??
(Sorry, couldn't help myself)
Check with a livestock Veterinarian, local riding academy, seriously............ Take a drive through the country until you spot someone with horses and stop and ask!?!
I know they used to use horse tail instead of stripped quills for quill body type flies.
Woops, I misread that. As to sources, I would assume that there is not a horse nearby if there is difficulty obtaining it. I wonder if it can be shipped overseas (horse flu?) coz my horses have plenty.
dont use much horse mair myself but when i do need some i get it from the local large animal vet.. free of charge...
I am not actually looking to cut the hair from a live horse or knock on a strangers door and ask if I can cut the mane off of their horse.
Horse tail hair is readily available, sold and easy enough to find. Horse mane on the other hand for some reason is not.
I will keep the vet in mind.
Jim
If not, sing out. I'm sure there's heaps of people here happy to send you some.
What do you use mane hair for?
Only thing I can think of is the wing for Bunyan Bug's!...Been keeping an eye out myself for anyone owning a horse of light colored maine around here for just that purpose...
http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/7/7_2_121.gif This is such a shame because I have horses and will be on my sister's horse "ranch" in a week or two where there are horseys of every color being groomed daily and mane and tail hair by the bagful.
Seems I need to get a licence though to export any hair or hide to the USA, otherwise could of helped out here.
By the way, I think it is a shame that I cannot help out, not that there are (sensible) rules.

Try Crazy Crow Trading Post for horse hair. They also have all kinds of fur, tails and whole hides.
Bill/Gringo, Yes the mane hair is for larger Bunyan Bugs. I have a bundle of it in natural white but have been unable to find it in other natural colors. The tail hair is easy to find but the mane hair is not.
Gringo, It's the thought that counts. You may want to keep some for yourself though for larger imitations. Bunyan Bugs are the only bug or fly that I know of that calls for horse mane hair. Never heard of it being used for anything else. It's long length makes it easy to work with on larger imitations like big Bunyan Bugs.
Grunt, Sent Crazy Crow Trading Post an email to see if it is mane hair or tail hair that they sell. We will see.
Thank you, Jim
Jim,
If all else fails ... could you color the mane hair you have? White hair should take very well to hair color. Dye it just like you would a "regular" head of hair, and condition it really well after coloring. You could get just about any color you wanted right off the drugstore shelf!! (works good on light colored feathers, too)

Horse mane hair is also used for woven bodies on Franz Potts style wet flies. The "Sandy Mite" is one of the best known of his flies, but there was a whole series of "Mite" flies. ( They are available at Jimmy's Fly Shop in Idaho Falls, tied by a fellow from Swan Valley. ) It is a very simple pattern, once you get the weaving technique down.
There is also a cranefly dry fly that is tied with woven horse mane hair - believe it is called the Mackay Special. A friend of mine ties it for fishing the Big Lost River in Mackay, ID.
Last summer I was talking to Jim, at Jimmy's. He had been fishing the Teton River, using a Sandy Mite and catching bunches of cutthroat on it. A couple days later I was reading some stuff on the Bulletin Board of another website and a fellow was going on and on about this old guy he met fishing on the Teton a couple days earlier who was using a fly called the Sandy Mite and catching bunches of fish with it. Hmmmmm.
I believe there is an article by Al Campbell somewhere in the archives on the Sandy Mite, but I don't think he tied it with horse mane hair.
If you can't find what you need, send me a PM. Depending on the color, I might be able to clip some from one of my neighbor's horses ??

Check out Ebay. Last year I bought four bundles of horse tail in different shades & lengths (all natural colors). You might be able to inquire about the mane with one of the vendors.

Horse manes are routinely "trimed" by pulling. Ask anyone who has a show, racehorse, or pensioner, they'll be happy to give you some. If you want just black hair email me with your address letting me know how much you want and I'll pull some for you from my two retired "moving lawn ornaments". I can also send you some black tail hair.
Who the heck would you get to buy it for you though?Quote:

My neighbor will provide some horse mane hair shortly, but I can't be sure about the colors available. If you want some of it, send me a PM, including color preference and your mailing address.

How about old violin bows? I usually throw the old hair out when I have mine re-haired, but it never occurred to me to tie flies with it. I am about to re-hair my bow again. Would you like the old hair?

You have a PM.

I'm frequently referred to as "the north end of a south bound horse"... Next time I get a haircut...
Seriously, it is nice to see everyone trying to help out.
