YEE-HAA a trip to the doc and reason to be happy!

As some of you know I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. When I went to the doc on that fateful day near the end of February I determined to take control of my disease and face things head on. Well, today I returned to the doc and here is the update:

In that span of time, just over 30 days, I have lost 30 pounds, bored three new holes in my belt to tighten it up and lost at least one pants size. My blood glucose has come down to the low 100's and it is not fluctuating as much as it was. I can walk 6 miles and feel like a million bucks afterward. My blood pressure and cholesterol are good. I am sleeping much better. I feel like a new man. Amy and I quit smoking in September. It feels great to be able to breathe again! Doc is elated and so am I!
Amy has really been a tremendous help in the dieting area. She is also out walking now too. That's no small feat for someone that has had 3 cervical discs removed and has herniated discs in her thoracic and lumbar back. I am so proud of her!

Today I got my new set of wheels and I will take Amy out to pick out her own set.

By the way, Amy has been talking about going fly fishing and paddling with me. She thinks we will have fun doing these things together. I agree!

Eric, Buddy...............I COULDN'T be any happier for you than I am, reading this post! How well, I remember the "posts of the past" when a lot of your health concerns began. MAN, what a difference to NOW read this one!

Congrats on the new "wheels" Eric ! I wish I could get Bill out walking or on a bike, alas, that is an uphill battle. I will keep trying. I am also proud of Amy on her walks with ya....I cannot wait to see her new set of wheels.

Hee, Hee, Amy calls it being mule headed and tosses in a "colorful metaphor" or two to emphasize her point! That's when I react like the Air Cavalry Trooper that I will always be by grabbing my fly rod and retreating via a charge through the nearest exit at "Full Stab" speeds.:lol:

When life dealt you an "Ace of Spades" YOU turned it into a "King of Hearts" Keep looking forward and not back, I'm glad to hear the good news! I know how tough it can be, I faced a similar situation a year ago, I'm now 89 lbs lighter and all the blood work is good. It's great to feel good!! Great news indeed (on the weight loss and control of your glucose levels)! Thanks for the update. There have been a number of here who were praying and pulling for you.

It's OK to be a "bad boy" once in a while, just don't do it every day. I'm sure even your doctor will say it's OK to splurge once in a while (mine did).

Think of how good you feel now and how bad you felt 30 lbs and a few packs of cigarettes ago. Vow to never feel that bad again! You CAN do it.

My Father-in-law, was diagnosed with diabetes several years ago, and he did the same thing you are doing now, and he is doing great! So keep up the good work.

I don't mind at all. Matter of fact I am glad you asked. The fact that you have the desire to try is a very good sign. Shows that there is some type of motivation there. Here goes:

First off you have to want to quit for yourself. Yep, I am telling you to be selfish. It's really O.K. because it's for your own good health. Talk to your friends, family and doctor about it. Your doctor can prescribe a drug to you called chantix. Click on the link below :

Never be embarrassed or too proud to ask for help, even if all you need to do is talk. Soon as people learn that you are trying to quit smoking they will openly show you a tremendous amount of support. The folks at this site are wonderful at that. When you are ready to try start a new thread here in sound off and the support and advice you get will be tremendous! Let us help you do it for you!

Second, I did not quit "cold turkey"! The only cold turkey I use is in my sandwiches. I used what i call the time method. I started out by smoking a cig every 20 minutes. Then I moved to one cigarette every half hour. From there I moved to half a cigarette every half hour. smoke the first half of a cigarette at the first half hour, snuff it out and then smoke the remainder of the same cigarette at the second half hour. Snuffed cigs taste awful when relighted and that should help motivate you to quit. Then I went to one full cigarette every 90 minutes, two hours and so on until I was only smoking two full cigarettes a day. At that time I felt comfortable enough to quit entirely. You will get cravings so chew lots of Wrigley's Gum, even if you do not like it. Actually, any gum will do but the idea is that when you crave a cigarette pop a piece of gum instead. You will probably gain some weight but it will come back off if you start taking a daily walk. Those walks will help you quit, help you get your wind and cardiovascular function back plus make you feel much better. Keep yourself as busy as possible at all times to take your mind off of your cravings. An idle mind is the Devils workshop as my granny would say.

Remember to use your support group here and, most of all, DO IT FOR YOU!:D
