Beaver Walk / Trestle Run
Really nice weather today. Bright blue skies. A light breeze on and off, and occasionally a stiffer wind to deal with. Temps in the mid 40's.
Started on the lower end of the Beaver Walk about 1:00. First fish was a nice 16" brown. Over the next six hours, covered a lot of water and caught fish in a bunch of places. More whitefish than trout, as usual, but a good number of browns. The whitefish, with a couple exceptions, were pretty routine. The browns all fit in a 14" to 18" bracket.
It was interesting fishing a number of spots I haven't fished along this section of river, and finding at least one or two fish in each one of them. And the places I have fished regularly also gave up some nice fish today. Lots of different kinds of water, from slow runs to fast riffles, to deep holes, to a big flat off the main current that was more like stillwater fishing than river fishing - all with a single brown r.l. stonefly nymph.
As usual, one fish stands out at the end of the day, today one out of twenty plus whitefish and nine or ten browns -a 22" whitefish. It stands out for two reasons - just about a year ago I caught another one about that size in just about the same place, on a streamer, which is very unusual, and because when I saw this one today I immediately began wondering if it was bigger than the 23" whitefish I had several weeks ago. Maybe next year ??
No blue wing olives today. A few midges around, but no obvious hatch. No fish up, except a few whitefish at Trestle Run. Trestle Run did account for a couple browns and four whitefish in about half an hour.
Several eagles around, several osprey, lots of ducks and quite a few geese. And that big brown is still lurking in that side channel, in a place that defies a decent presentation - except maybe with a stick of dynamite.
