Be All End All Fly Shop?
My wife and I were day dreaming about winning the lotto like people sometimes do, and talked about some of the things we would spend a little money on. The conversation turned to certain stores she would definitely pay a visit to. Of course I said I would be laying down a chunk of money on gear. It brought up the question of a really high end fly shop. You know, someplace that has absolutely everything, caters exclusively to the long rod crowd, and only the well heeled portion to boot. Does such a place exist? I need this information very soon, because the Big Game multi-state lottery is up to $63 milllion, and I'll be winning it tomorrow night. :D :D

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
Bob Marriott's in Fullerton Ca. has most all of it. When I use go there i'd have to just take the cash I wanted to spend, and leave the credit card at home. I didn't trust myself to stay in control.

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
Nothing I have been in in my entire life came close to being a thoroughly stocked shop. No way to keep that much stock on hand. On average, any particular shop I enter has between 20 and 40% of what I am looking for that day.
-
Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
I have no idea where such a shop exists, especially since I'm not welcomed in places frequented by the "well heeled." I got too much "stuff" on my boots. Good Luck.
RS1, I don't know what planet you're from, but Bass Pro Shop is not exactly a Mecca for the fly angler. IMHO they are more of a Dollar Store when compared to Cabelas.

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
You could try Jack Dennis' fly shop and department store in Jackson Hole Wyoming.
Pretty high end.
-
Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
Rickards in Jackson Hole, as good as it gets, speaking of such what do you all think of
the new Henry's Fork Anglers, as for me I will really miss the old shop....
Take care

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
Perhaps I could encourage you to travel? I guess that with 63m you won't mind. Anyway Australia has some fabulous isolated mountain streams, awesome impoundments in the south east for trout and salmon, further north for all the bass and barramundi you could hope for. Go offshore for bones, tuna, and so on blah blah blah.
Leave your gear at home, because you will be going to the "COMPLEAT ANGLER" in Sydney or Melbourne. You will see EVERYTHING you could ever need, be pandered to by snotty salespeople with handle bar moustaches and will pay far more that you would prior to that 63 million.
It's the one you are looking for!

That pretty much sums it up for me too. (I wouldn't want to join any club that would have me a member).
I think if I walked into a shop that caters to the "well healed" they would call security and escourt me to the door post haste.

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
I'm sure there are some shops in London that are so exclusive you need a referal to get in the door.
Might be kind of fun running around looking for one.

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
If I ever win a big lottery jackpot, I'll open and run a completely stocked fly shop until I go broke.
Would be fun to do for the couple of years that 37 milliion would last.

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
They are all closed and out of business; the good ones that is.

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
I don't really think it is possible. Like others said, To hard to keep everything in stock.
Bass Pro Shops??? :? :?

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
Bob Marriotts as already mentioned may be the closest to an all inclusive shop. They do cater to the less well heeled too. Their print catalogs used to run a couple of hundred 8x11" pages though the current print catalogs now only have a subset of their offerings. They carry just about every major rod and reel brand commonly found in the U.S. and have a fly tying materials section larger than most other entire fly shops that I have visited. Yet they don't have everything either. Not much from small rod companies or the really high end low volume reel companies and so on. Not every conceivable fly tying material or vise and so on. They claim to be the largest single source of fly fishing items in world with more than 37000 inventory items.

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
I dunno about high end...Any one that carries Simms or Patagonia or Orvis is high end....Did I say Simms? Cabela's has them now...but at least they don't hold their noses in the air like a couple of the fly shops that I have visited in Colorado.
Granted they did wait on me and I did buy some flies from them, but conversation was out since I wasn't ready to book a trip or buy $1000 bucks worth of gear.
I'm not a big spender. Never have been, but I DO like conversation. AND, the fly shops at the time that I visited were NOT busy.

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
whenever im in northern california i visit "the fly shop" in redding. they have anything you would need and then some. a big plus is meeting mike mercer one of the best tiers and authors around. they are a friendly staff.everytime i order online i get an email and a phone call. cant beat that! they treat everyone with respect.i live in mississippi and i have never gotten as good of treatment here.

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
Wow! What a response on a bit of day dreaming. Bob Marriot's and "The Fly Shop" in California sound like quite the places. Jetting off to N.Z. for an afternoon shopping trip strikes just the note of self obsessed over-indulgence to appeal to my more reptilian side though, so The Compleat Angler it is! In reality a piece of land on an excellent smallmouth stream somewhere to build the family homestead would be more my speed. I know from my guitar playing days that I suffer from a bad case of "off-the-shelfitis", so I likely wouldn't need any more temptation than a local shop to drain the bank account. Nice to dream about though! I'll let you guys know how it went when I get back from New Zealand this weekend. :D :D
EDIT/ Sorry Gringo I don't know how I got N.Z. in my head. I mean no offense. I mean Austrialia of course. /EDIT

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
BTW, I consider Marriotts and The Fly Shop both to be 'home' shops. For many years I got up to Redding 2-3 times a year and had to drive through Fullerton where Marriotts is located on the way north. I have spent quite a bit at both stores. If I couldn't get something from my local shop those two were my fall backs. Marriotts is much larger than The Fly Shop.
I like the idea of traveling around and visiting shops in other lands.

OK forgiven! Come over, bring a suitcase of cash from the win, and we will do both.
I'm off to NZ in a couple of weeks but I'll leave a couple of fish swimming for you.

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
I know of two fly fishing shops that fit your description. The first is a sponsor of this site, TCO Fly shop in West Reading, PA. Their shop has all the high end rods, waders, reels, etc you could ever want. Chad Horrigan and his staff are great guys and are always willing to give advise. The second place is the Fish Hawk in Atlanta. It's been a number of years since I've been there, but as I remember you could easily spend a months salary in one visit.

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
the website says that you will be able to purchase online in Sept 07 looks like they missed that deadline. Guess I won't be doing my Christmas shoping with them.
It would be fun to walk into there store in jeans and a sweatshirt, just to watch the expression on the sales peoples faces.

I believe the shop your looking for is called "Orvis"

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
Cabela's makes Bass Pro look undernourished. But that is a big-box shop in case you have a problem with that. Rusty Gates at Gates AuSable Lodge has the best "little" fly shop I have ever found. I have never been to Dan Bailey's but I used to hear good things about it.

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
You probably can't find what your looking for and that's a real shame but the truth. So in light of the bad news I will make you a deal. You pay me 500K a year + expenses to be your personal shopper! Anything you want I'll bring right to where your at. Heck I'll even deliver stream side.
And don't anybody go under bidding me either.

I think I will take one of those $170 ties and wear it to one of those eatin places where they cut your tie off if you are wearing one. Yea, Right!!
Isn't marketing great!! It always amazes me how they can stroke someone's ego to get them to open their wallet. P. T. Barnum was right!!

Dr. Bob,
I did research on Hawaiian Shirts and they started at $3.95 at the Thrift Store to $110.00 on a Miami Site.

Feather-Craft in St. Louis
Bob Marriott's in LA
The Fly Shop in Redding, CA
Kaufmann's Streamborn in Seattle
Taylor Creek Fly Shop in Basalt, CO
and for anything related to steelhead, especially tying materials,
Waters West in Port Angeles, WA

Re: Be All End All Fly Shop?
Buffalo Outfitters used to be the place to go for me. They recently had a change in management and I will now have to go elsewhere to get my fly gear!
