Back early from the fish in.....
Everyone is having a wonderful time and everyone is catching fish. I broke my arm on the second day , I couldn't fish after that but hung around because it was a blast!
I thought i had just badly sprained my wrist and it was getting better then 3:00am on the 4th dAy it began to really hurt. So I packed up and I drove for 9 1/2 hours back to Canada and free medicare . The x-rays showed a break of my arm just above the wrist. I am now sporting a pretty purple fiberglass cast from elbow to fingers. getting it reset was not a fun thing.
The people at the fish in so far have; fallen in (3 so far ), broke an arm, twisted an ankle , smacked into a log with their ribs, cracked their head on a rock and tossed the tip of a Channer bamboo rod into the selway so far (got it back ) . Plus a chicken went to its last reward. And there are two days left. Perhaps I am safer at home.
I got lots of pictures and hope to have them on here soon. Hard to type with a broken wing so I will sign off for now.
sure wish I could have met superman as rumors have it he flew in last night. Too late to xray vision my arm.

Re: Back early from the fish in.....
Must be something about Idaho. We went for our week at Henry's Lake from the 14th through the 24th, but I received a call on the 17th morning that my mother/my best friend did not wake up. A very big shock because ther was no warning and she had told me the day before to hurry home, she missed me.
I am sure she has her wings by now and is with me always.

All the rest of the "experiences" are understandable. Since nobody else is asking, just what the hell was a chicken doing at the fish-in?  Was it there as part of a meal (fresh is best)...tying material (renewable resource)...someone's pet (I never met anyone with a pet chicken)? This ought to be a good one.

Let's NOT tell Joe V what "that's" all about. It's to be experienced and not explained.

Re: Back early from the fish in.....
Fly Goddess. I am so sorry about your Mum.
I take heart from the words of Kenny Rogers song The Gambler......" the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep " I believe that.
She and your family will be in my prayers.
The problems with my arm are so trivial compared to that.

Re: Back early from the fish in.....
FG....You are in our prayers. Sorry for your loss, but you are right. She will remain with you always.
GnuBee....Sorry about your bad break...pun intended. Sounds like you may be safer at home. Who said fly fishing is a "non contact" sport? Glad to hear you had a good time while you were there.

After i broke it the next morning I gouged my finger with a hook while getting my gear out of Cookie monster's (Dennis Garrison ) car. I went and sat at the picnic table and bragged about my bleeding finger to the guys that were there. Whereupon Cookie leaned over the table and looking me in the eye said very seriously, Gnu Bee you do know that flyfishing is not supposed to be a bloodsport don't you???

Re: Back early from the fish in.....
Joni,
You and your now sainted Mom are in my prayers.
I think of you everytime I use the little Griggs flyrod you found for me last year. It's sure not a replacement for a Sage but in the right, tight, small and narrow conditions, it's just right. Again, thanks very much for your help.
My Mom left us 12 years ago, and Dad went to his reward 22 years ago. It'll hurt for quite awhile but you'll always know they're there to help you.
Prayers and best wishes.
Bill

Re: Back early from the fish in.....
FG,
Sorry to hear of your loss. Good to know she probably went very peacefully though. Listen for her next time you're out on those beautiful Utah waters, and I'll bet you hear her whispering to you.

Re: Back early from the fish in.....
"free medicine"? Ain't no such thing.....................
Maybe you should have said "Went back to take advantage of the medical care I already paid for 10X over with my high taxes" :)
-
Re: Back early from the fish in.....
Gnu Bee Flyer,
You made the right decision driving 9 hrs to receive medical attention. If MY arm was going to fall off, I wouldn't want it to FALL OFF in a Foreign Land.
I'm proud of YOU!!!

FG,
Just back from the FI. Sorry to hear of your loss.
GBF,
Hate to say it, but I thought that arm was broke when it started to change color. Glad you had the good sense to get medical attention.
In the count of three falling in, did you count VEE twice?

I'm from the city, so I keep forgetting about these "country customs" for fine dining. So I guess you hit 2 out of my 3...food & tying material. My question is why would you want to screw up good fried chicken with OKRA????? Gag! I'll eat road kill before I eat snotty okra. Reminds me of a head cold. Yuk!

Re: Back early from the fish in.....
Rodger,
If it makes you feel any better, I spent the entire Fish-In fishing with a busted elbow. It doesnt affect any range of motion but as soon as I put any pressure on it, it hurts likes an SOB. As soon as I get a chance I will get it looked at. It has been bothering me more than at least two months (only three or four people who were there knew about it). I know that it is not soft tissue damage, but more than likely bone damage. Also, I am not the only one to experience lower arm/elbow pain during the Fish-In. I will not go into details, but lets say that the Sunday after the Fish-In, my plans changed a bit due to someone else's aches and pains (no offense intended to said person and I respect their decision). Been there, done that unfortunately.
Glad you got it looked at properly since I have been in a similar situation and had the same results...possible strain turned into a fracture (and 3 months in a cast :( ). Take care my friend and hope all goes well with you. Look forward to seeing you again.
As a side note, my Dad has decided not to return to Lowell next year since he has such a hard time getting around on the rocks. By the end of the trip, I pretty much saw this coming. I know he had a lot of fun, but with the physical ailments he has, its not a suprise to me.
-
Re: Back early from the fish in.....
Thanks Mark, if this keeps up we will have to call Lowell the recovery ward
fish-in.
Thats to bad about Your dad, having him at a fish-in is one of the high lights.
I think perhaps he would do well at the CWFI as It is not so hard to get around as Lowell. The main thing is to do what is best for him. Say Hi to both of your parents for me will you?
I plan to win the lottery next year ( to balance out the bad luck of lowell ) so will probably be buying a nice cabin on the beach in Belize. When that happens I will invite all you guys to come bone fishing with me. ( I think that was the drugs talking. )
Cheers!

FRIED okra, Joe, fried okra. It's the boiled okra that is slimy. We're a gonna have to edgu-mo-cate you some. I'll send Jack up there, since he knows the lingo. :)

Re: Back early from the fish in.....
Glad to hear you are going to live, Roger. We worried about ya when you took off that morning. And I agree, it was one of those trips... I still haven't quite made it home, myself.
See everyone in chat in a couple nights.

Re: Back early from the fish in.....
Well I finally got my elbow looked at. At least I can say there is nothing broken it. The doctor thinks I just inflamed and irritated the bursa in it. Actually it hasnt been to bad lately except I did rest it in the wrong position last night while tying flies. OUCH.
Rodger, hope the arm is getting better
-
Re: Back early from the fish in.....
Said right arm only hurts when I: a) type on the puter; b) write; or c) cast anything heavier than my 3wt, or push the 3. Hurt bad enough after two hours on the water Wed night that I had to take Thursday off.
Doctor's appointment the 26th.
Mark, fishing was better here at home than anywhere on the way home. Figures. Hi to your folks for me.

Re: Back early from the fish in.....
My arm seems to be healing fine , the steady ache has all but gone.
Doctor said it was a clean break that should heal just fine. He also made some dumb comment about how dumb it is for a 63 year old to be clambering around on the rocks in the first place. He isn't a fisherman so I forgave him.
I did get to pick out the color of my cast so it is bright purple, about the color of Barney.
DG. Same here. My arm hurts when I try to;
1. type
2. Write
3. Cast
4. Think about having to leave the fish in 2 days early one more year in a row.
Mark. That is good news, glad the elbow wasn't broken.
One scarey thing I learned from this is that there is a bone in your wrist ( it is situated about an 1nch from where my break is ) that only receives blood from one end. If you break that one you have just so long to re attach it before it dies and you lose the use of your wrist premantly. Had I known that I would have left Lowell immediately . Sometimes toughing it out is not the smartest thing in the world.

Re: Back early from the fish in.....
Roger, of the other three people who fished with me that trip, two fell in, and the other, I hear, said he wouldn't fish with me again. Maybe cause I tried to drown his wife, maybe it was that fish I caught right behind him in that last run... You are the only one I actually injured. Well, VEE got a cold...
7 hours on the water today, 3wt, arm doesn't hurt too bad, even after towing in a couple of 20+ browns. I think part of it must be the cork. My 5wt is a bit bigger than the 3...
