Catfish, on a flyrod?
Can cats be taken on the fly? When I was spinning I'd usually just still-fish for them, what flies work best for catfish, retrieves, techniques etc? There's a small lake not far from I and there's some catfish in there and I was wondering what I'd need to use to catch them.
Any info is appreciated,
Shane

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
Big Black or Olive Wollybuggers work sometimes here in Ky. I weight mine to keep them on the bottom.

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
i don't target catfish, but fish a small lake where i catch at least one evry time i fish it. what has worked are woolly bugger's (black), grhe #10 and believe it or not had one smack my popper last sunday. nice 22" channel cat.

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
My only experience has been with Channel Cats. They suspend OFF the bottom and will bite minnow patterns.
-
Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
I've hooked them on nymphs, Clousers, white bunnies and Zoo Cougars, meaning a topwater hit. From my experience that just about covers the water spectrum. I'll also admit that I've never targeted Channel Cats. I was fishing other species when they hit. My largest flathead was caught on a Crappie Candy fly while fishing for crappie in the late spring, coming in just over 10 lbs. What incredible fighters, though. Wow. JGW

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
8) We catch them regularly here in OK on a crayfish fly and a black bunny leech variation. In fact we catch everything on these 2 flies. I have also caught one on a popper, but I think it is rare to catch one that way

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
This on took a popper after dark.
I caught three or four of them that night.

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
ive caught them on pheasant tails and wooly worms.
only caught 2.
my first one was on the wooly worm last year. 8 lbs on my 5 weight.
hell of a fight.
my second one was with a #10 pheasant tail. 17lbs!!! on my 6weight!.
holy crap that one took 30 minutes to land on 2x!

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
Fly Fish TV did a show on that. It's in their 2006 collection and it's called Canadian Cats and Carp. I've caught a few over the years. Black Wollybuggers worked more often in the river I was fishing in but you can get them on nymphs and other things...almost like carp fishing really.

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
Going to be spending some money on quite a few flies haha. Until I get my tying supplies and learn how to tie. Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate it everyone!
I used to do a lot of catfishing with the spinning outfit, but now that I've gotten rid of it, I'm eager to catch everything with the flyrod.
Thanks again,
Shane

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
Shane,
Learn to tie & QUICKLY! I don't target cats, but black woolly buggers are effective. Again today, I took my 2 1/2 yr old granddaughter Tori out. She tied into a cat on one of my regular ponds that ran her to the other side of the pond before it broke her snelled hook off. She was fishing her little Zebco with Berkley Gulp earthworm for bait. The smallest cat I've taken in this pond was over 20".

My friend Steve with his 34-inch channel cat...

and my 29-incher, both caught on flyrods this past Saturday morning at Two Rivers State Recreation Area just west of Omaha, Nebraska. The lake is total catch & release for channel cats and largemouth bass.
Steve used a Muddler Minnow; I used a brown woolly bugger. :D

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
Hi All,
I have only caught 3 channel cats on a fly rod, and in every case I caught them on streamers. Two were caught on a maribou Mickey Finn. The maribou Mickey Finn was a large one, a #4 maybe. One was caught on a woolly bugger with out hackle, the tail orange and the body olive, this was a small one, a #12 or #10.
Regards,
Gandolf

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
my buddy was catching them on dry flies last year.
they were at the surface, and he was throwing a bug white wulff at them.
It did him no good really, he would hook tons of them......then they would straighten the hook everytime  it was pretty funny to see the mounting frustration.

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
This time of year the catfish in the Susquehanna river, near Harrisburg, Pa. rise to The "White Fly" hatch ( Ephoron Leukon .) This is a heavy hatch/spinnerfall that comes on at dusk. large catfish and smallmouth bass are all over the place during this sometime blizzard-like hatch. A white wulff tyed on a lightwire # 10 hook is good, also an all white emerger with a trailing shuck.

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
the jiggin shad is a fly that works amazingly for anything that eats minnows and most that dont. 8) if you can get youre hands on one you should definitely try it. it seems to work best for crappie though. i only know of 2 maybe 3 people who make it. me the inventor and his friend. he probably taught some others though. so definitely try it if you get one

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
is it a secret?
can you post a picture of this secret fly?
-
Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
i dont have a good digital camera but once i get one, either me or doug (the inventor) are hoping to post it on fly of the week.
the ingrediants are
marabou tail, lead wire wrapped around the shank, a little bit of small white chenille wrapped around the shank, pearl/rainbow/whatever its called mylar slid over lead and chenille for the body, and a strip of foam over the top that tapers and extends just past the hook bend, then add on some small rhinestone eyes. tie it on a size 8 or 10 jig hook

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
thanx, sounds pretty cool :)

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
One way to target them is to fish streamers off of riprap. They seem to like riprap to hold on and ambush bait. Lots of channel cats caught that way. of course bass and other predators may crash the party as well.
Also, up under willows or other overhanging vegetation in the wee hours.

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
One time I was spin fishing for crappie from the shore. I cast down stream along the shore bushes, a BIG channel cat took my jig and never came back! :(

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
Was just out this morning catching channel cats on a #8 brown girdle bug. A storm had gone through the night before and taken out a big willow tree and dumped it in the pond. There were a lot of swirls around the downed tree when I got there, but nothing was taking the usual surface offerings. So, I put on an unweighted girdle bug and tossed it out there. Sure enough, it settled maybe six inches, there was a swirl, and I was into a 12 inch channel. Not very big, but I was using a 4wt so that was fine by me. I caught 4 more in the next half hour, but had to leave to get ready for work. I'll propbably have to go out this evening to see if the trick works again 8)

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but zonkers work as well as, and maybe for me, better than any other bait fish imitation. I have also caught a couple on larger prince nymphs as well. I usually tie my prince nymphs on salmon hooks for the added weight, and in case I hit into the larger cats and carp of Manitoba's Red River. HTH.

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
Haresear with rubber legs...Wahoo! Works great on Carp also.

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
Caught a 22 incher just at sunset this evening on a mylar minner ( at least thats what I call it). I had already lost a #8 dry fly of my own pattern and a similar minner #6 XL, broke my 6# leader so I changed to a 9. I thought I had been getting hits from LMB . Boy was I surprised. Catfish gave a good fight too.

Re: Catfish, on a flyrod?
Caught my first one this past weekend. Was dead-drifting (and swinging) crawfish patterns for smallies in some pretty fast water when a 23" cat hit my fly. Those things hit like a ton of bricks. Put up a great fight. Wouldn't mind catching more of them.

I too concur with this. Sometimes the catfish bite is better than the smallmouth bite on this area of the Susquehanna.

Sorry, but I gotta brag a little bit as this 34-inch, 17.5 lb. channel cat that I caught after work tonight is my biggest fish yet on a fly rod. She took a white woolly bugger.

Oh, yeah, Doug -- it was on purpose! Nebraska Game & Parks manages two of the old sandpits at a state recreation area 10 minutes west of Omaha as total catch & release for channel cats and largemouth bass. There are about a half dozen of us who take our float tubes out there and fly fish for the "kitties." I love getting towed around the lake.

How interesting! That is the first time I've heard of C&R for Cats. I don't understand why they couldn't have a Slot or some kind of limit on the Cats?? What are the goals of the Parks to manage the ponds?
I really respect Channel Catfish, since I have tangled with them while fishing for crappie and bass.
Thanks,
Doug
