yummy
Suggests a mouse to me :D
Great looking fly, however; just some advice if youre interested. Next time try a longer shank hook. Sometimes, not often but sometimes the amount of hair in the gap of the hook can cause the fly to ride funny in the water as well as keep you from hooking up on fish. Be sure the hook is very sharp. I always test my new creations in a sink or pool when available to determine how the fly sits n the water, swims in the water or even looks when wet. Just advice from a fellow bass bugger.
~~~waders~~~
When I first saw the fly it just screamed Pike at me. Good looking fly.
HMD- Great looking fly. I fish similar patterns for striped bass and I love 'em, especially when the bass are on mullet and herring. It's a great waking pattern that pushes a lot of water. I also use an all black version in black for fishing at night, blind casting while wading.
Don't know if it really makes a difference or not, but after tying, I've gotten in the habit of trimming the packed deer hair CAREFULLY with a razor blade on the bottom close to the hook shank to improve the gape in the hope of improving hookups. I leave the bucktail collar as is, since it adds to the meaty shape of the pattern without being likely to interfere with a hook set. I use Mustad 34007, mostly in 1/0.
For what it's worth, I tie mine sparsely (like yours) with the shiny hackle sides out (not splayed out Tarpon style) to make it less air resistant in casting (we get a lot of heavy wind). The action isn't as good as it would be with splayed wings but it seems to work OK and is easier for me to throw into the wind.
I can just picture your fly learning to swim between some lily pads. Twitch.... Twitch.... Twitch.... Twi-KABOOOM!!!!
peregrines
Thanks for putting that image in my head!
I think it would be funny and exciting even if I didn't get a hook up!
Doug :D
Hillard 8) ,
Ya might want to send that down here. We'll gladly test it for'ya. :wink:
.....lee s.
Thanks guys, I had to post that one, My buddy fishs trout exclusively almost and thinks some of my creations are off the deepend. I tell him if thats where the fish are then thats where my flys are goin ;) I'll have him on to pike this year hopefully. Between what I tied and swaped I have a suitcase full of pike flys for spring.
Is that an Eagle Claw? I've tied several different hair bugs on those short shanked hooks. Try putting a sequin on the front. The action in the water, and the way it POPS is incredible. Cool fly.
nope it's a mustad 2/0 stainless saltwater hook. I'll have to try that secuin idea next time.
That looks a lot like a patter by Lou Tabory called the Tabory Slabside. It is designed to fished with a sinking line, so that it bobs up and down as you strip it in. Besides creating a wide profile, the tall and slim deer hair head makes it wobble some like a wounded fish. You don't want it to wobble too much, of course, but some instability is good.
HMD - ifin you're chasin pike - that one will do some exercise damages to your arms ........ :lol:
Looks danged close to what a local pike chaser goes for.
Even give 'er a go on bass ...... although there I'd trim the beard a tad.
darrell,
