Looks like I may have a crack at saltwater fly fishing ... from home!!!!!
Betty, we are probably not going to get any much need rain off this storm in north Georgia. My wife's best friend's mailing address is Kitty Hawk, NC. She has ridden out every storm since she has been there with no serious damage to date. I am concerned she is going to push her luck too far. According to Google Earth she has water on the east and west sides of her property less than a half mile from the west and three quarters from the east. You can tell a Southern girl, but you can't tell them much.
The way the weather dudes and dudettes are talking surge ... I sure hope you can "encourage" her to leave!
Uncle Jesse,
Sure enough wish I could send you some of the rain we will be getting. We are already way ahead for August in rainfall after a bit of a dry early summer. Lakes, streams and rivers are at or above normal levels but the ground is saturated. Calling for flooding with some wind. Power outages expected to be wide spread and long lasting.
Still not going to have it as bad a The Outer Banks, Baltimore, Wilmington, Philly, Newark, New York, Boston and Bangor. This morning it was announced on Fox News that all of the east coast refineries have shut down so fill up while you can.
Hey All,
Here in Delaware the state is on Emergency Alert. We've got designated evac routes and everything. This will be my fourth or fifth hurricane and I'm looking forward to it. I like the big blows, but they can be dangerous. The worst thing up here are the big OLD trees. They have a tendency to fall down. The clouds are just forming in the southern horizon. We should see the beginnings of rain in the AM. I hope the fish hold on tight!
All the best,
Dave

Jesse, I think that applies to a lot more than just Southern Girls.
My youngest daughter lives in Yonkers on the north side of NYC. She grew up in Wyoming so the breezes they are expecting shouldn't bother her much but she is worried about flooding and trees falling over and power outages.
Just came off Cape Cod this morning. There is an exodus of boats, trailers and campers leaving the Cape. 2500 National Guard Troops have been deployed to help with evacuations. Wind speeds will drop from what was initially reported but we expect high winds, heavy rain and lots of downed trees and power outages. During the last hurricane to hit Massachusetts ( Bob in 1991 ) we lost power for 2 weeks and it took 10 days to clear all of the downed trees from roads. Stay Safe folks.
Rain just started falling in Northern Delaware about an hour ago (Noon EST). Light winds, but those are expected to increase in the coming hours. The cloud rotation was cool... East to West! That's a real cyclonic rotation! Good stuff. The Emergency Management folk have upgraded the amount of rain from 5-7 inches to 10+ inches. That's a lot of rain! The worst flooding will be in the 24 hours AFTER the storm. All that runoff has to get down the little streams (like the one behind my house - Christina Creek) into the main channels. We are expecting our little stream to crest somewhere around 9 feet or 2 feet over flood stage. That will close the road, but that's about all. I hope for the folks down stream of us that's all we get. Wilmington, DE has mandatory evacuations near the Christina River (the big part of our creek) and all along the White Clay and Red Clay rivers (those feed the Christina and ultimately the Delaware River & Bay). Monday will be a mess.
Good luck to my fellow East Coasters! Stay dry and safe!

This is a radar screen I snipped two minutes ago. This is from an Outer Banks TV station.
so its raining here not bad on and off but tomorrow will be the worst of it for us the reports change like a woman changes her underclothes. but we are as ready as ever.
I'm on Long Island, only 16 miles or so from Manhattan as the crow flies. Looks like I'm going to be at ground zero sometimes early tomorrow morning. The eye of this monster is supposed to be real close to me. I have everything taken care of. Everything is in the garage, including my new Weber. I have plenty of block ice in the freezers for WHEN the power goes off...not IF. They're saying maybe up to 20" of rain now. This should be fun. Most of us up here are concerned with tornadoes forming ahead of the storm. I'll let you all know what happens...if the power hangs around. Good luck to everyone affected.

Hold on tight Ken!
Were hoping only the best outcome for you all!
Check back in when you can..
Be safe!
This is 5 minutes ago radar from the Outerbanks of NC.

The small stream two houses down the hill is 2 feet over it's banks. The end of the road is closed and those folks have to wait it out, the stream is too dangerous to cross. It's raining pretty hard, no cats and dogs, just frogs and fish. The wind is gusty, but not so bad. It's much lighter than Floyd, currently. We had a tornado warning for our town, but no indication that there actually was one. Our back yard is still green, the big stream (Christina) is still running true. We have a forecast of heavy rain until 5am, it's now almost midnight.

10:41 AM ( EST ) Massachusetts...the rain is so heavy that I cannot see my neighbors homes. Wind is only gusting to around 20 mph. Storm has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm and will not even be here for 3 1/2 more hours. It is the rain and the winds ( 50-60 mph estimated ) that I still worry about
Here in Delaware, Irene has all but gone away. We're on her tail coats now. Just a bit gusty with some small rain squalls. The stream that overflowed last night is back in it's banks and only damaged the culvert it overflowed a little (took away some of the soil and grass that protects it). There are several pieces of former flotsam (logs, branches, trees) along the side of the road, but the neighbors seem to have made it through unscathed. We are saying goodbye to old Irene and hoping she doesn't do much damage on her way North. Stay dry and safe up the NE Coast.

It has past us here in Western MA. Many towns have floods, houses destroyed, a covered bridge moved off its moorings and floating down the river.
To get an idea of the power, the Deerfield River, usually 350 - 900 CFS is 38,500 as we speak on the upper section and the lower section is 50,000 CFS. That is about 100 times normal. Bridges that are usually 10- 15 feet above the water are getting their undersides tickled by the river. The Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls MA had water come over the top.
Good news is that there is no loss of life in our area. . Most rivers are subsiding with the exception of the Connecticut river, which now is a chocolate brown and is expected to rise until Tuesday when the waters from Vermont flow through.
Me and mine are all safe and sound. Tomorrow its off to Cape Cod for a delayed and shortened vacation due to the storm.

Finally got my power and cable back. Not a lot of damage here. Some branches down, no flooding (thank The Lord) and just a little wind damage. People up in the Catskills fared much worse. The Schoharie Creek was so high that it washed away 30+ homes...gone completely. This is a creek that I used to fish as a kid and was able to cast a small Mepps spinner across (sorry....I was kid). The towns of Prattsville, Windham, Hunter and any more are under water because of this. Prayers go out to all affected. i consider myself to be very lucky this tie around. The weather guru claims that tropical depression 12 could turn out to be another Irene, possibly affecting the east coast in 10 days or so. Again, prayers for all people affected by this.
