Shot Swap is Mailed
Deer season just ended up here. We're near the end of the year, so here's the deal: I got a squirrel with my truck, so I'm willing to make an offering for karma by tying up a swap with my squirrel hair. That's the deal. Type of fly doesn't matter. Nor does the basic material. Duck. Buck. Squirrel. Rabbit. Patridge. Elk, Antelope. Seal. Whatever. Name your fly and what Mother Nature provided us for the swap. January 1 is the deadline for signup. February 1 is the deadline for getting the flies to John G . White, Box 672, Clara City, MN 56222.
We'll take the first dozen. Typical stuff applies. SASE packages. Toe tags. Crush proof box. The works.

Re: Shot Swap
Interesting swap, I'll get in on this one with a bambi hide I picked up last year that I haven't tied anything with yet.
The story on this little fawn is that I came across it momments after it was clipped by a truck on a busy logging road. It was a cool spring morning and it was still warm so I skinned it on the spot and thru the hide in the back of the pickup. I left the carcass for the predators that would eventually clean it up. It is interesting as it still had it's spotts it was so young of a deer, which is the main reason I figured I'd skin and preserve the hide. Its a very fine hair so I'll have to think of what to tie with it now sign me up.
-HMD
Edit: A conservation officer actuall stopped to see what I was doing and was ok with me taking a bit of hide so as the carcass was left for the predators and scavengers to clean up.

Re: Shot Swap
HMD....be careful what you put in writing...fortunately you are among friends
-
Re: Shot Swap
I'm in. I've got squirrel, and muskrat from a friend of mine that I have proccessed, so it makes sense for me to offer Die Fledermaus.
-
Re: Shot Swap
Put me down please have a little bit of everything
-
Re: Shot Swap
I'll give it a try. This will be my first swap.
I'll do some bucktail Clousers.
EDIT: Do I need to make all the flies the same color? I have a few different colors of bucktail and could do 3 or 4 each of a different color just to add a little variety.

Re: Shot Swap
A welcome to you all! JGW
-
Re: Shot Swap
I would like to join your swap with a Polly Rosborough pattern the Casual Dress Nymph.
-
We're half way there! Respect those sacrifices of nature. Let them live on!
-
Re: Shot Swap
Is this strictly a roadkill swap, or could I use Angora Goat? Or Elk, or Alpaca, or Deer Body Hair?
I'd like to get in with a generic nympth.
Thanks,
-
Re: Shot Swap
This is intended as an honor to fauna, to show our respect by giving their sacrifice an "after life" if you will. So if we took the life . . . we shall give it new life as an artistic fly. Years ago I did a turkey swap here that was incredibly successful. Lots of interesting flies, many with no names. I sent a few feathers to those who signed up and they sent back their dozen or so creations. This is along those lines. That said, Gigmaaster, get back to us on your material of choice. Thanks. JGW

Welcome, Bill. Look forward to it/ JGW

Re: Shot Swap
So, as long as we killed it...by whatever means, then it's cool?
Could I get in with a Nimrod Bucktail?

Re: Shot Swap
Hey, We got wild turkeys hereabouts. I'd like to join in with somethin' built outa turkey. Gimme a day or so to come up with a specific pattern...........Thanks, the name's Dan................ModocDan
-
Re: Shot Swap
I'd really like to get in this one. I have pheasant, tons of duck, deer body hair, bucktail and turkey all from this fall. If they're do in February, then a good spring or winter fly huh.......I'll get in with one of my favorites. I'll do a wet fly generic imitator the Deerfield Special. Maybe a variation, I'll have to see what the creativity provides. Great idea!

Re: Shot Swap
Only a couple of slots remain! JGW

Re: Shot Swap
Well, it wasn't shot, but I have a groundhog/woodchuck/whistlepig/marmot skin I scavenged from the road last spring.
Thing was a bugger to skin & scrape. Unsure if it's just the nature of the beast or if it was the time of year...
I'd like to get in with something from the whistlepig hair... TBA later.
thanks

Re: Shot Swap
I would like to get in with a SQUIRRELLY, if that is ok. I use Red Fox Squirrel Tail to tie it. Thanks John

Re: Shot Swap is Closed
My flies are done and will be in the mail first thing tomorrow morning.
The Nimrod Bucktail
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n...odBucktail.jpg
The Nimrod Bucktail was designed by Henry Beverage, who was the Fishing Editor of the Portalnd Press Herald, sometime in the mid 1940s to the mid 1950s.
Hook: Cabelas Model 40 sz 8
Thread: Danville 210 Denier Black
Body: Flat Silver Tinsel
Ribbing: Small round Silver Tinsel
Beard: Yellow Bucktail, 1-1/2 times the hook shank length
Wing: Black Bucktail over Green Bucktail, 1-1/2 the hook shank length.
I dyed the bucktails, so if the color is a little off, it's my fault. I used Ritt dye.

Re: Shot Swap is Closed
Just workin on my swap flys now, got a whole saturday to myself finally after 8 weeks of packing moving and comuting for work. I came up with something I am going to call the Bambi Caddis.
Hook: size 12 mustad signature series light wire
Body: Dubbing your choice of color, I used a mix I made of light cahill antron, charturuse diamond dub, and natural hares ear.
Wing: fine deer hair or your choice of suitable replacement hair.
Thread 8/0 black uni.
I've caught numerous trout on similar ties, but usually just use regular deer hair, or elk, not sue how well the fine hair will float, but it should still catch fish.

Re: Shot Swap is Closed
Folks, I'm tying a SHWAPF using squirrel tail over peacock herl body. Liking the looks of it. May not be very "trouty" but should diminish the bluegill population somewhat! JGW

Re: Shot Swap is Closed
I have never fished the fly I chose for the swap, I had run across the recipe a while back while researching different flies that called for muskrat. To be honest, I didn't think much of this fly. I looked pretty much like a non-descript ball of fur on a hook. I kept looking at them as they came off the vise, and couldn't get into their appearance. I must admit that my lowly tying skills don't help either. Then I did something I sometimes do with a new fly. I tied it to a piece of tippet and gave it a dunk in the fishtank. What a difference that made! It really came to life. The underfur holds air bubbles that just shimmer. The guard hairs flex and "swim". The wing sometimes looks like a shell back, sometimes a wing. Mr. Schneider knew what he was doing, I just didn't have the sense to believe him.

Re: Shot Swap is Closed
Wow, Sags! I can't wait to see this one. JGW

Re: Shot Swap is Closed
John,
The only things I can say are don't judge this fly by my meager tying skills, or how it looks in your hand, it is truly one of those flies that doesn't look like much of anything, but at least to me, looks like something a fish would want to eat once it goes swimming. I know that according to it's story it was developed to be a stillwater fly, and it certainly doesn't need much water movement to bring it to life, but it have no doubt it will aquit itself quite well drifting along a stream.
By the way, here is the recipe for the fly as I have tied it;
Hook: Mustad 9671 size 8
Thread: UNI-Thread waxed 6/0
Body: 3 fingers of muskrat belly fur, spun in a dubbing loop
Wing: grey squirrel tail fibers
Head: black thread with coat of Sally Hansen Hard as Nails

Re: Shot Swap is Closed
Nimrods are in the mail. (I thought they had already been mailed, but I found them in my outbox this morning).
-
Deerfield Specials are done. Will probably get them in the mail after Christmas.
Recipe and tutorial can be found here: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flyt...te/part48.html
I substituted red-dyed pheasant tail for the tail though b/c the Pheasant was taken this year.
Hope they bring lots of fish for you. These are a great fly on high mt streams with a lot of pocket water.
-
EDIT: Nevermind...found it.
EDIT AGAIN: Flies finally shipped. Just got back from the post office.
-
Finally had some time to go through my swaps to organize what I have and what is missing, including this one. Flies are still due from RDL, sIrGr1nGO, Sags, ModocDan, Wild One and Fly Flinger. Thats as of January 13. Of course, we have over two weeks left in the swap. What I've seen so far are excellent. Fun swap. Keep 'em coming!!! JGW

s1rGr1nG0 -- Your flies arrived. Thanks. Great job of tying! JGW
