Everyone is selling "HAND TIED' flies, is there a machine tied fly?
If there is I sure would like to see one.

Wouldn't that be false advertising? I submit that "hand tied" indicates no use of vise...
Kind of like restaurants that list "home made" foods on their menus. Occasionally I'll ask a server who's home it was made in- just get blank stares, and mumbling, in response. Oh- and I will never drink a "hand crafted" drink. Keep your paws out of my food!:-)

Wouldn't that be hand-held? If "hand tied" indicates no use of vise it should should also indicate the use of no tools (bobbin, bodkin scissors etc). Or does using a vice constitute 'vice tied' fly?
I say we close this can of worms and weld the sucker shut!
All fly tiers probably agree that flies cant not be machine tied. I think that 'hand crafted' fits what most of us tie versus 'mass produced' flies that are coming out of Asia.
what would have happened if the patent for the "electric rotary tying device system" ever came to be??
what would it have bbec called?

Most flies are hand tied. A lot of advertisers use this term but whether they are tied in Arizona, Africa, India or the UK they are still tied by hand. Just a marketing term I believe!
I seen soft plastic nymphs formed right on the hook.
No tying involved
OK.
I use a rotary vise.
I use an automatic bobbin, mostly.
I use tweezers.
I use sizzors.
I use a Materelli whip.
And a bodkin.
Hair stacker, hackle pliers, and 14/0 thread, water based fly head cement....
I must be a Borg!
But.........
I use natural ingredients....
Hair, feathers, cotton threads, fur (not dyed)...
And the above are put on with my finners....
Hey! My finners are on my hands!
Dad Gum! Maybe that makes "hand tyed"!
I'd like to see a video of a hand tyed, #28 hook fly.
No, no vise, no bobbin, no sizzors, no nothin but the hook, materials, and finners used.
Grandpa did the best he could with the tools of his day.
Daddy did the best he could with the tools of his day.
But dad gum, Ima gonna use the tools I have today.
This message brought to you via the Internet.... :tieone:
Wise words Sonny, wise words. I agree with you.

I figure that little word HAND, is worth anywhere from $1.00 to $400 bucks depending on how gullable you are.
How's that old marketing saying go again...
...a bird in hand, can be priced a whole lot higher than one in the bush.
Usually, when I've seen the Hand-Tied moniker, it was on a package of flies hand-tied by several thousand Chinese children in a sweatshop in Kowloon, or some other Chinese city. I refuse to buy anything made with virtual slave-labor, if I know about it. But that's another issue.
